Travel Spring Break Without Breaking the Bank!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been looking forward to Spring Break since the first days of the semester, but making travel plans can be stressful. Should I go home and see my family? Head to the beach for a little sun? Venture to NYC?

As a college student, many of those trips seem out of reach, but lucky for us, Rosalyn Hoffman, in her book “Bitches on a Budget,” provides tips on how to plan the trip of your dreams without breaking the bank.

Where to Start:

First off, nothing is too extreme! Spring Break lasts for a week, so make the most of it.
Search the internet for some exciting new destinations.

Hoffman suggests hitting up sites like concierge.com, tripadvisor.com and kayak.com/explore.

Where to Stay:

Think about your destination. If the hotel in a nice location and it’s a good deal, do it. Don’t waste money on a five star hotel room if you’re never going to be in the room.

Hostels are a great budget-friendly choice and there are hostels all over the world. They’re also a great way to meet new people or learn about the city you’re in from locals (more on locals later!)

Travelling in a group? Consider renting a house or a villa somewhere. It’ll end up being cheaper after you split the cost and they often have a lot to offer.

Use those social networking skills! Headed to Denver and don’t know where to stay? Bet you didn’t know that your best friend’s sister has friends in Denver that would love to have you as their next houseguest! Facebook is a great way to find these connections – be safe, of course.

Where to Spend Your Time:

Can’t afford to hop on a plane and head to a faraway destination? No problem. There are plenty of inexpensive and equally awesome places to visit near UP.

Oregon Coast
Only a one and a half to two hour drive, the Oregon Coast makes for a great day trip or weekend adventure. You can rent a beach house with friends or find a cheap hotel. Seaside and Cannon Beach are two great destinations with awesome beaches and communities.

Seattle, WA
Home to Starbucks, the Space Needle and Grey’s Anatomy’s Seattle Grace Hospital, and it’s only a three hour drive. What’s not to love? Don’t have a car? Trains leave from Union Station all the time and a round trip ticket only costs about $70 depending on your travel plans. Check out the Amtrak website for schedules and deals.

Vancouver, BC
Want to get out of the US? Vancouver is only a 5-6 hour drive. If you have a passport, why not venture to this amazing city. Vancouver has tons to offer, and www.tourismvancouver.com has info about everything from free festivals and events to budget-friendly activities and attractions.
