Meet Campus Celebrity Sammy Van Den Berg!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

Tell me about your CPB involvement. You’ve been involved since freshmen year. What keeps you coming back? Plans for the future?

Well, I started going to CPB because second semester of freshmen year, I had already made some friends and I wanted to do something more in my free time. I just went with Jenna Warner (shoutout to mah homie) one day and came back every week after that! There are undeniably great people in CPB: you want to do event planning because you want to do event planning with them. We do a lot of hard work, but we have a lot of fun while doing it – that’s why I come back. As for the future, I’m not 100% sure, but I may be filling some larger shoes next year!

What is your favorite part about this campus?

All the huge, green quads… In high school, I would daydream about throwing a Frisbee on the grounds like they do in movies. The quads and the (semi) logical layout of the campus were a huge part in why I like this campus so much.

What is your best memory from this campus?

God, there are so many great ones. I only lived on campus my freshman year, so I guess it feels fitting to choose one that contributes to why I spend so much time on campus nowadays… Favorite memory is petitioning onto ASUP freshmen year and getting voting in. I was up against another person, which is rare, and he was an incredible candidate, so it was terrifying to be interviewed against each other in front of everyone. Allegedly there was a pretty heated debate, but it was just really cool to be chosen and become a part of ASUP, which I still am today, reppin’ off-campus.

You have a job in the marketing department on campus. How’s it going so far?

It’s going well! I’m pretty busy this semester, so I don’t have as much time for it as I wish I did because I just want to work on projects all the time. Joe Kuffner is the coolest boss ever though, so I love going in and we spend most of the time talking about a solid combination of work and life.

Let’s talk tatts. What’s your favorite of the bunch?

My favorite tattoo of the bunch is definitely the first one I got: the mountain on my wrist. My last name means “from the mountain” in Dutch, so it’s a little homage to my family. It’s very small and simple, but I drew it myself and the orientation makes it pretty unique I think.

Portland is a little different from California? Miss the beach?

More than anything! I’m from the Bay Area – Cupertino, to be exact – but we spent a couple weeks a year at the beach, plus a weekend here or there. The beaches in Northern California are a little different than most people would think. Most assume it’s like Southern California and it’s warm all the time and everyone surfs and sunbathes, but it’s more of a combination between that and the Oregon Coast. You get a whole lot of beauty and wide open beach spaces, but you also get great surf and sunshine most of the time. I miss it so much!

Tell me about your dream job. What is it? Where would you be?

I really have no idea. I think that’s why I like to be involved in so many things on campus. I’m trying to figure out what sticks with me the most. It’s been a couple years here, though. I’m starting to realize that I’d probably be happy doing a lot of things, and I’ll just have to see what’s out there waiting for me.
