Volunteer With Animal Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Puppies, kittens, bunnies…what’s better than that?  The only thing better is helping puppies, kittens, and bunnies that truly need some TLC.  Getting involved at Animal Friends can allow you to do just that.

What is Animal Friends?

Animal Friends is a no-kill shelter located on Camp Horne Road in Ross Township that focuses on ending animal abuse, finding loving homes for companion animals, strengthening the bond between humans and animals, and much more. This organization is constantly looking for volunteers; not only do the shelter animals need love and attention, but Animal Friends puts on volunteer-based events regularly to spread awareness about their mission statement, help animals socialize with one another, and more. Some events even combine with other shelters in the area.  The more people Animal Friends can get to volunteer for these events, the better.

How does one get to be a volunteer at Animal Friends?

The process is extremely easy.  Visit their website, thinkingoutsidethecage.org, fill out a questionnaire, and sign up for an orientation.  After that orientation, you will officially be a volunteer!  In order to ensure the safety of the animals, volunteers must go through handling classes before they are permitted to handle the animals in the shelter.  However, before taking these classes, volunteers can still help out at events.

What kind of events does Animal Friends host?

Essentially every kind imaginable, and much more.  Children can have animal themed birthday parties at Animal Friends, which allows kids to enjoyably learn about animals and the shelter.  Bunny yoga is held as a way to de-stress after a long week of work.  A Mutt Strut is held every summer; dog owners can bring their dogs for a group walk and pet friendly activities.  Animal Friends also has booths at various places in the greater Pittsburgh area in an effort to educate as many people as possible about the shelter and their mission statement.

This organization truly is one that cares about the well-being of their animals.  If you love animals, why not get involved and help animals in need while doing something you love?  More information about all of the programs offered at Animal Friends, different ways to get involved, a full event calendar, and much more can be found on their website
