“Relive the Miracle:” The 35th Anniversary of the Miracle on Ice

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

This weekend, February 20-22, I made the long 9 hour journey from Pittsburgh to Lake Placid in New York, home of the 13th Olympic Winter Games, to “Relive the Miracle” 35 years later with one of the greatest hockey teams ever formed in the United States.

The Miracle On Ice is the name brought to attention of the game where the 20 US college kids beat an elite Russian team, who had never lost a championship in consecutive years before. The USA were total underdogs in the whole tournament and beating the Russians was just the tip of the iceburg, eventually winning the whole Olympic tournament for gold.

This game was an ultimate high for the team and even the nation, going through some political battles at the time to rise a nation in victory over a hockey game. Now, 35 years later for the first time since the last day of the tournament all 19 living team members made the journey back to the rink where it all happened. With one of the members, Bob Suter dying in early September of last year, the team would commemorate him by raising his jersey to the rafters in whats now called the Herb Brooks Arena.
