Rape In The Porn Industry

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Recently a Russian adult film star was lured to a hotel meet with two men to be interviewed for a role in an adult film. Unfortunately, there was no interview planned. The two men tied her up and repeatedly raped her for hours. When she found a chance to escape once the men grew tired, she jumped out the window, breaking both of her legs in the process.

Rape in the adult film industry is not something new. Both men and women are victims. The most famous victim is Linda Lovelace. Lovelace became a household name after her hit movie ‘Deepthroat.’ In her memoir however, Lovelace claimed that her first husband Chuck Traynor physically abused and raped her throughout their marriage. She also said that he forced her to be gang raped by five men. Sadly, Lovelace died in a car crash in 2002.

Working in the porn industry is just like any other job. The actors have contracts that list what they will and will not do. Adult film stars have rights, too. They have the right to feel safe, the have the right to feel comfortable, and they have the right to be paid. There is never a time where rape is accepted, no matter how someone earns a living.

If an individual says no, that means no. Rape can happen to anyone, from any background, and it shouldn’t be looked over because some makes adult films for a living. Consensual sex means exactly that, it is consensual, both parties have agreed to it. Once someone feels uncomfortable, the sex should stop – cameras or no cameras. Just because someone has sex on camera doesn’t mean they are asking to be raped. No one asks to be raped. No one gets up in the morning, and says “It sure looks like a great day to be raped.”  Whenever someone comes forward as a victim of rape, or any kind of sexual assault, it should be dealt with seriously, regardless of their profession.
