This past Saturday AJ Burnett took the mound in his final regular season start when the Pirates took on the Reds at PNC Park.
Before the game the Pirates had AJ’s two sons, Ashton and A.J. Jr., throw out an honorary first pitch in recognition of their father. Although A.J began the game a little shaky, allowing two runs in the first inning, he would soon settle in and record 10 strikeouts. After 7 strong innings Burnett was relieved, possibly marking the end of a long and successful career.
As he walked from the mound to the dugout the crowd gave him a standing ovation and yelled and cheered for the pitcher. The moment he disappeared from view the crowd began chanting “AJ” over and over, causing Burnett to reappear and thank the crowd one more time for their support. Unfortunately despite AJ’s performance the Pirates would still fall to the Reds 3-1.
After the game the Pirates held their final Zambelli fireworks show, and ended a night of celebration with a blast. That night was definitely a night that no Pirates fan will forget, especially the ones that were able to experience it in person. But I think I can speak for all of us Bucs fans when I say we hope to see AJ again soon in the next month. And hopefully we can celebrate with him again, but next time with a parade and a World Series trophy.
