Last week the NHL unveiled its outdoor game schedule for the 2016-17 season and the Pittsburgh Penguins are headed back to Heinz Field! On February 18th, 2017 the Pens will face off against their cross-state rival, Philadelphia Flyers, in a Coors Light Stadium Series Game.
This announcement comes in support of both the Penguins and the Flyers celebrating their 50th anniversary in the National Hockey League. Both teams were introduced into the NHL in 1967 as part of a six-team expansion. The rivalry between the Penguins and Flyers has been undeniable since the first time these two teams met, and it continues to be one of the most heated rivalries in the NHL.
Since the two teams were established they have met 274 times in the regular season and six times in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with the Flyers holding the advantage in both. Yet so far this season the teams have only met once, with the Penguins taking a 4-3 victory back on January 21st. They are set to meet three more times in the regular season, on March 19th, April 3rd, and April 9th.
It has been two years since the Penguins have participated in an outdoor game, and nearly five since they have hosted one here in Pittsburgh. The people in the city have been yearning for another game since then, and who better it be against than the Penguins biggest rival!
More details regarding the 2017 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ – including broadcast and ticketing information, and other events surrounding the game – will be announced in the next few months.
Let us know how excited you are for the Stadium Series to come to Pittsburgh!
