The pop music world was forever changed this week. Did Lady Gaga release a new single? No. Did Miley Cyrus twerk on something? Not quite. However, this past Tuesday, Hilary Duff did release the music video for her new single “All About You”. The twangy hit’s video includes Hilary line dancing, street dancing, and tracking down a really hot guy. Sounds amazing right? Well, to sum it all up, it was utter perfection. 2014 has marked the return of the one-time Disney teen queen. She has been quietly recording new music throughout the year and teasing us through Instagram and Twitter. We got the first taste of new music all the way back in July. “Chasing the Sun” was the first official single released from Hilary’s upcoming studio album. The single was a breezy summer confection, which made fans lose their minds. The comeback track peaked at #79 on Billboard Hot 100, making it Hilary’s 6th single to appear on that chart. The video also has racked up more than twenty million views on Vevo. The pop star later revealed that she wanted her 4th studio album to be released before Christmas and a tour for winter 2015. Hilary has been on top of her A game in 2014, and is really winning the hearts back of her older fans and gaining new fans as well.
The question is, “why is Hilary the ‘comeback of 2014’?” Also, why is her comeback so important to pop culture? The answer is simple to both of these questions; she is an icon that we have missed. We all grew up watching her play the sassy teen Lizzie McGuire, we all owned a copy of Metamorphosis, we all cried to Raise Your Voice, and we all sang along to “Wake Up”. She was our generation’s role model. In a time of celebrities behaving badly (we see you Lindsay). Hilary never let partying and drugs destroy her. She kept it classy, and showed young girls and boys everywhere how to act. With 13 million albums sold, and box office earnings of over 300 million worldwide, Hilary has left her mark on the entertainment world. Hearing her on the radio again lets us remember the simple times of our lives. The times where we didn’t have responsibility, where the only thing we had to worry about was a soccer game or dance practice. Hilary Duff was there every step of the way, in most of our childhoods. This is why she is crowned the “comeback queen” of 2014, because she once again is helping us along the way. We are now young adults, figuring out the world; on a whole new journey. We no longer watch the Disney Channel religiously and we no longer have school dances, but we have those memories. Hilary Duff’s comeback is so important to this generation. She reminds of us of our childhood. I can’t wait to get my hands on her new album, go see her in concert again, and jam with friends to a whole new set of songs. She is an icon, and the entertainment industry wouldn’t be the same without her. Hilary’s last album, Dignity was released all the way back in 2007; making this comeback 7 years in the making. So far, it is been quite the success. Miss Hilary Duff, we are “All About You”.
