Girl Meets World: the closure Boy Meets World fans deserve

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Never in a million years did we think of all the shows we grew up watching that Boy Meets World would be the one to receive a spin off show nearly two decades after its final episode aired.

It is everything we ever could have dreamed of and more. We get to see Cory and Topanga as parents. Cory Matthews is a father. Cory and Topanga have children. Plural. That alone can toy with super fans emotions!

Unlike Boy Meets World, Girl Meets World is set in New York City where Cory, Shawn and Topanga moved to in the series finale. Cory and Topanga now have a teenage daughter, Riley, who the show focuses around. She also has an uncanny resemblance to her quirky father. In addition to an elementary aged son named Auggie. BMW fans will associate his silly behavior towards his sister to the relationship Cory and his younger sister Morgan had in the early seasons.

Being that GMW mimics its successor, Riley of course has a rebellious and loyal best friend named Maya. She may not physically resemble or favorite troublemaker, but their personalities are basically the same.

Cory is now a middle school history teacher and has Riley and her friends in class. His ideas and lessons would remind you of a certain legend named George Feeny, but I won’t use the world replaced because no one could ever replace Mr. Feeny. Topanga is a partner at a law firm (which is why they relocated to New York) and somehow still resembles a soccer mom. Despite her busy schedule, she still does everything for her children. But would expect anything less from Topanga Lawrence-Matthews?

Easily the best part of the new series is the way the producers are steadily bringing back fan favorites for guest appearances. Fans have gotten to see what Eric, Jack, Angela, Cory’s parents and even his little brother Joshua have been up to.

The biggest difference between the two series is that GMW is aired on the Disney Channel while BMW was aired on ABC. Even though we all grew up watching the reruns on Disney…it’s a bit…odd. GMW is much more filtered and geared towards preteens rather than BMW. The new spinoff will not be able to touch upon some of the deeper subjects like they did in the first series.

The weirdest part is that some of the kids watching GMW right now on Disney Channel are too young to know the storyline of BMW. They don’t know that Cory and Topanga have been together since they were in diapers or that Cory and Shawn are the greatest friend duo in all of television, and most importantly that we all sobbed when Feeny said “class dismissed’ for the final time.

I guess life goes on. Live evolves. Cory and Shawn have handed over the reins to Riley and Maya now. We should feel lucky that not only has the storyline lived on, but it’s living on faithfully. I’m sure Disney never guessed that this new show would have such an affect on OUR generation.
