A Day In The Life of a NYFW Model

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

It’s that time of year again! Givenchy, Prabal, Ralph Rucci and every other important name in the fashion industry have made their way to Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. And this year (just as every other year) the model lineup was pretty darn amazing. Kendell Jenner and Gigi Hadid are just two of many lucky gals that have the job that most girls dream about. But what is it really like to be a NYFW model? Well, let’s see…

Earlier this week, Kendall Jenner posted an Instagram video of herself in a car shaving her legs on the way to her next gig. The 19 year old wrote, “So much fashion, not enough week #YouGottaDoWhatYouGottaDo,” Um ouch?

It is VERY rare that a NYFW model does one or two shows a day. Normally, A model will be stomping down about nine or ten catwalks every day during that week. Not to mention stopping for photo ops with the A-list guests and doing interviews.

Imagine being poked and probed with makeup brushes and lip liner all day. It sounds fun for us but really, it can get annoying quite quickly. Every girl likes getting dolled up every once in a while but putting your face through all that in one day, can’t possibly be good for your skin.

If you’re anything like me you’re probably asking yourself, “When is there time to eat?” Well, models grab a bite whenever they can. Actually, a bite might be too time consuming. Let’s say, a nibble. In the car going to the next show, or maybe backstage when no cameras are around, a model may then take that nibble.

So, knowing what it is really like to be an NYFW model, would you still consider this a “Dream Job?” For me, being a model was never really an option. I am way to short and I love to eat. But just because you aren’t in NYFW doesn’t mean you can’t be a model. Be comfortable in your own skin, be yourself, and make the world your runway! Every girl can indeed be a model. Tell us your thoughts about modeling in NYFW on Twitter, we’d love to hear if you would sacrifice your full lunch for a nibble or if you have a steady hand like Kendell to shave en route to a gig!
