Celebrate St. Paddy’s the Pittsburgh Way!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Alright, it’s officially time to celebrate all college student’s favorite holiday – St. Patrick’s Day!  A day dedicated to Irish heritage, decking out in all green, and having a good time, Pittsburgh is the place to be on St. Patrick’s Day.  Check out some of the awesome events happening in and around the city to celebrate this holiday!

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

This one’s the most obvious, but also the main event you don’t want to miss.  It’s impossible to ignore since it literally goes right through Point Park’s campus.  Need more incentive to come to this event?  It’s the second-largest St. Patrick’s Day parade…in the world.  Put on all the green apparel you have and head to the Boulevard of the Allies at 9:00 am on March 12.  I’m not sure if the parade or the fact that the streets of Pittsburgh are littered with shamrock stickers and green silly string for weeks after the fact is more fun. (Shout out to the green beads that still hang from the Blvd. and Wood St. stoplight from last year’s parade!)

Irish Fair in the Square

Also on March 12, this event occurs in Market Square from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm, immediately after the parade, so the celebration doesn’t have to end!  Merchandise and food are sold at vendors, and two free concerts happen during the event.  For over 21 collegiettes, several of the restaurants have drink specials, particularly on green beer.

Pittsburgh Irish Festival – Celtic Gift Shoppe

Stock up on all the Irish items you can think of at the Celtic Gift Shoppe at the U.S. Steel Plaza. This event is held on March 9, 10, and 11 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  It’s just in time to grab some fun items for the parade!

St. Patrick’s Day Bash

Another event for over 21 collegiettes, head to Howl at the Moon on both March 12, the day of the parade, from noon-2 a.m. and March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, from 5 p.m.-2 a.m.  The day of the parade, they will feature live music at 4:00 p.m. and there is no cover charge until 8:00 p.m.  On St. Patrick’s Day, it is 100% free admission.  Both days feature drink specials, such as green beer, “Lucky” buckets, and Leprechaun Bombs.

Now you have a few fun ideas to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the right way.  Have fun and stay safe!
