The Best Valentine’s Day Memories from Your Childhood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Holidays take on new meanings as we grow older, for better or for worse. Though no matter what, in childhood they often bring us simple joys which become cherished memories to fondly look back upon. Here are some of the best things about celebrating Valentine’s Day when you were a child:

1. Candy!!

Conversation hearts, red, pink, white M&M’s, and all that chocolate…this was one of the few days you could get away with eating pounds and pounds of candy. Bring on the tooth decay.

2. Dressing the part

Every holiday had its dress code, and Valentine’s Day was no exception. Pinks, reds, and hearts everywhere made up your kindergarten ensemble. Velvet scrunchies and heart hair clips, anyone?

3. Buying your class those platonic valentines with your favorite characters

Those mandatory card exchanges at school weren’t so bad when you could pick out valentines that matched your interests. Whether you were into Disney, superheroes, or cartoons, you were covered. Of course, there was always that one kid who went over the top with clever homemade valentines, but you were happy with your SpongeBob cards.

4. Making a valentine box

And what was a school card exchange without decorating a box with red paper and foam heart stickers? This box was the chance to show off your artistic talent to your classmates.

5. Making a special valentine for your crush

Maybe they would notice you put in a little extra effort just for them?

6. These brownies

They’re ten times as delicious as Cosmic Brownies. Seriously.

7. And, of course, these cookies

These cookies made every holiday better.

8. TV specials!

A holiday wasn’t complete without special episodes of your favorite TV shows.

9. Spending the night with a babysitter when your parents went out

Sure, you would have prefered to be home alone, but playing with babysitters could be pretty fun!

10. Acting like you were too mature for school Valentine’s Day parties as you got older

But secretly, you were still happy about missing class and getting free candy.
