5 Ways to Stand Out as an Intern

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

The spring semester is rapidly approaching, meaning collegiates will be starting new internships. If you are a first time intern, you may be a little nervous about beginning your professional career.

Here are five tips to make a great impression during your internship:

  1. Dress to impress || If you look like a bum people will think you are a bum. Dress professionally and confidently. When you wear something that makes you feel more poised, people will take notice. You can never go wrong with wearing black! (I know sweatpants are comfy, but please don’t wear them to work).

  1. Be ON TIME || Arriving early to your job is even better, if you can. Nothing tells an employer that you are irresponsible more than showing up late, or even doing work late. Write things down in a planner, make alarms and reminders on your phone, make to-do lists. Figure out what works best for you and stick with it.

  1. Get to know your boss || Not only will this help get you in the flow of the company, but also it helps you anticipate your employers’ needs. You will get major brownie points if you remember what your boss likes (and doesn’t like).

  1. Ask for feedback || This will assist you as you improve your skills. They will help you discover your strengths and weaknesses. It also shows your boss that you are taking the initiative to improve.

  1. Write thank you notes || Not only should you write a thank you note after each interview, but you should write one after your internship is over as well. Don’t just email them, though. Send an actual card and be specific about what they helped you accomplish. This will never go unnoticed.

I wish everyone starting their internships luck!
