Valentine’s Day Dilemma: What to Do, Buy, and Wear

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

It’s almost that time of year again for couples to celebrate their love and commitment to one another. Campus is decorated with pink and red hearts, valentines are being sold in every corner, and you can’t seem to escape conversations with friends gushing about their adorable Valentine’s Day plans. While single folk may dread this day, those of us with significant others can indulge all we want, planning for the big day in every spare moment we have. Sometimes, however, this leads to a dilemma: What are we actually going to do? What do I buy him?! What do I wear?! Maybe you’re still dating your high school sweetheart and have celebrated in every way possible. Or maybe, a new crush has just asked you out. Here are some ideas on the best things to do for Valentine’s Day in Pittsburgh, no matter what stage of a relationship you’re in.

“We’re not dating yet, but we like each other!”

What to do: Being with a new crush on Valentine’s Day is so much fun because it’s unfamiliar and exciting for both of you! However, try to contain your excitement, and don’t move too fast. You can’t expect a fantasy carriage ride through Schenley Park or a $200 dinner at a Mt. Washington Restaurant just yet. Instead, stick to something a little more traditional, like dinner and a movie. Check out Union Grill on South Craig Street for great food and an intimate, but not overly-romantic setting. Then, head over to South Side to watch your movie of choice.

What to buy: At this stage, it is perfectly acceptable not to buy your Valentine’s Day date a gift. You’re not even official yet! However, if he’s dropped hints that he’s gotten you a surprise present, it might be a good idea to buy him something small. Food is always a good choice (what guy doesn’t like to eat…). Bake some chocolate chip cookies for a thoughtful and yummy gift that any guy would appreciate.

What to wear: Although it may be tempting to impress your new guy with a sexy red dress, voluptuous curls, and perfected pink lips, it’s too early to bring out all of the stops! Show him the natural you, with a little extra pizazz. Replace those jeans you wear to class with a high-waisted skirt, and pair it with a cute tank top and jacket. Spend some extra time to straighten your hair and apply fresh make-up. These small changes will be enough to catch his attention, impressing him without distracting him.

“6 months strong!”

What to do: You’ve done dinner and a movie before, so why not step it up and be a little creative? Instead of a movie, see a play or musical downtown. Pittsburgh has many Broadway shows playing at the Benedum Center, Heinz Hall, and Byham Theater. You may even be able to get discounted tickets through Pitt Arts, leaving you with money left over for the oh-so important gift. Leading us to…

What to buy: Since you’ve been dating for some time now, your guy may be expecting something a little more special. You know him well enough at this point to recognize his likes and dislikes, so take advantage of it! Is he a sports fanatic? Buy him his favorite player’s jersey. Is he constantly listening to music? Buy him a set of speakers or tickets to see an artist he likes. Giving him a gift that shows how well you know him is definitely special and won’t go unnoticed.

What to wear: He’s seen you in class, in your weekend party outfits, and on date night. So why not dress a little special on this Valentine’s Day? Pair a flowy dress with flats or wedges, and make sure to wear the jewelry he bought you for your birthday!

“High school sweethearts. We’ve been dating for practically forever!”

What to do: After dating a person for years, sometimes you get so used to each other that you don’t even care about celebrating Valentine’s Day. You’re perfectly fine staying in and watching a movie, just like every other weekend. However, it’s time to throw that attitude out the window, and go all out. All out, as in Mt. Washington. Hotel room. Boat ride. Helicopter ride. Everything. Long-lasting couples need to celebrate their relationship too, and this could be the perfect opportunity to reignite the flame that brought you together in the first place.

What to buy: Remember how I just said go all out? Well, go all out with the gift too! You’ve probably already bought him food, clothes, and concert tickets. You’ve been dating for a long enough time to get him a serious gift, like a trip for two to New York City, or any other place you think you’d enjoy spending time together. Plan the whole trip, from the transportation to the hotel room to the things you’ll do while you’re there. The time and effort you put in won’t go unnoticed and is something he’ll appreciate.

What to wear: Again with the going all out. I know, I’m being repetitive, but now is the time to bring out the sexy red dress and heels. He’s seen you at your best and your worst. So why not make this your absolute best? Blow him away, make him fall over, make him remember why you’re the girl he’s been happy with for years.

My name is Melodi Reich, and I'm currently a student at the University of Pittsburgh studying Information Science. After graduation, I hope to go into a technology related field. However, writing is one of my hobbies and passions, and being a part of Her Campus has allowed me to express my more creative side through writing articles and other content. Joining Her Campus was one of the best decisions I made in college, and I can't wait to use the skills I've gained through being in this organization in the future.
