You’re probably beginning to notice that your hair is fried and your split ends are becoming a major problem. Is your hair dry and your color dull? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! With about two weeks to go until Thanksgiving break, just about every girl on campus is beginning to think the same thing – it’s time to get my hair cut. But our time at home is short and I don’t think anyone necessarily wants to spend that precious time sitting in a hair salon for a couple of hours.

As I began to research for this article, I happened to stumble across multiple tweets about how nobody would ever get their haircut in Oakland and would rather wait it out until they got home. Now believe me, I have always felt the same. I am incredibly loyal to my hairdresser, so I am weary about trying new places. But after reading reviews about various salons in Pittsburgh, I may just have to change my mind. These salons sound professional, reliable, affordable, and are all close in distance.

The first salon I found is Puccini Hair Design. Located right on Atwood Street, I’m sure most of us have walked right past it and never noticed it before. From reviews, it sounds like Puccini’s really likes to cut a lot of inches off, so I would make sure they knew exactly how I wanted my hair cut if I went in for an appointment. A cut is about $30, but never over that, which is extremely affordable for a good haircut. All of the reviews say it’s a fun atmosphere and an extremely friendly staff, who will cut your hair so that it doesn’t grow back as quickly or in an easier way for you to maintain your cut while you’re here at school.

Next, I came across MCN Salon located in the Shadyside. This salon is a little more high-end, but not too over-the-top. Each cut is around $45-$55, which is probably how much you pay for a haircut at home. The price reflects the products they use, such as Kerastase and Bumble. All of their reviews raved about their colorists, so if you’re one who needs to keep up with highlights or lowlights, definitely look into MCN Salon. Most of the reviews said that the staff is friendly, extremely accommodating, interactive, and listen to what you want to do with your hair. This is also a salon where you can build a relationship with your stylist – definitely somewhere where you will want to return.

Veraldi Hair Beauty Wellness in Oakland is another salon that has flown under the radar. Each cut is between $30-$35, offered with a student discount. All of the reviews said that this salon is very edgy and trendy. They also said that even though the salon is small, it’s extremely cozy and that adds to its charm with their friendly staff who have great conversation.

Cardamone’s Hair Salon located downtown on Forbes Avenue is the fourth hair salon I found in the Pittsburgh area. A cut is a little pricey at $60, but make sure you make use of the student discount available because that will bring down to price to about $40. For people with unruly and curly hair – this is the place for you! Most of the reviews were from people who had said that no other salon had ever been able to manage their hair in the right way, but Cardamone’s got it right. Also note that the staff is friendly and the products they use are top of the line.

The last hair salon I researched was Dante Salon, located on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside. A cut at Dante is around $30-$35. And after reading all the reviews, I want to advise you all to look on Groupon before you make an appointment here! One woman said she had a groupon for $50 and her cut was only $30 so they offered her more services so that she would use the entire coupon in one visit to its fullest potential. You know that’s a good quality salon, because they are not trying to just make money off you, they actually care about their services and the way their customers are treated. I also want to note that a lot of reviews said they give fabulous haircuts to women with short hair.

One thing I want to note is that all of these places offer other services such as nails, waxing, and men’s haircuts, but the prices obviously vary on all of those services. No matter how loyal you may be to your hairstylist, realize that your hair may need to be toned up and worked on before you go home for break. It’s important to keep up with your hair because the more you let it go, the more you’re going to have to cut off at your next appointment. Open your mind and explore new options. You never know, one of these places could very well give you your best haircut.

Hi, I'm Kate! Orginally from northern New Jersey, I'm currently a junior at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in public relations and writing. Writing has always been a passion of mine and writing for Her Campus really let's me engage in something I love to do. I am a huge sports fan, especially for the New York Giants, Yankees, and of course, the Panthers. I am way into fashion and writing about it. I am also obsessed with travelling and one of my goals is to travel around the world and different cities in the states in order to see as many different places I possibly can. So far I've been fortunate enough to immerse myself in the culture of London, Paris, Chicago, Los Angeles, and a tiny island off of South America, Curacao. I really believe that in order to be truly happy, you need to become who you are meant to be and stop being who you think everyone else wants you to be. I'll leave you off with one of my favorite quotes, "Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine." - Lord Byron
