With signs and posters everywhere I look for the Rep Ya City Stroll and Dance Competition coming up this Friday in the Assembly room of the William Pitt Union, I couldn’t help but want to know more about the girls who were bringing this anticipated event to life! The girls from The N.O.T.O.R.I.O.U.S. Nu Chapter of Theta Nu
Xi Multicultural Sorority
, Inc. at the University of Pittsburgh let me in on who they are and everything they hope (and are) accomplishing through their organization.

1. What is the N.O.T.O.R.I.O.U.S. Nu Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc.?

The N.O.T.O.R.I.O.U.S. Nu Chapter is an undergraduate chapter of Theta NuXi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. at the University of Pittsburgh. We were nationally founded on April 11, 1997 at University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill, but our chapter was founded on April 14, 2002. Theta Nu Xi’s tenants are sisterhood, service, scholarship, leadership and multiculturalism. We do all we can to spread to increase multicultural awareness and spread diversity across the campus and community. We are sisters of diversity together as ONE.

Our national website is www.thetanuxi.org and our chapter website is www.pitt.edu/~tnxnu

2. Why would someone want to get involved in this specific sorority?

There are many reasons as to why each sister became a member of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc., but one of our most enticing features is the tenant of multiculturalism. It is a wonderful organization where women
come together to teach and learn about each others’ backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles, religions etc. We all have a unique connection while still being ourselves. The manner in which we uphold our tenants also are other
reasons people want to get involved! We keep chapters small in order to promote sisterhood. Each sister can truly say that she would be able to count on another sister for anything in a time of need. Also, because of
the small chapter size and our intake process, an individual has no choice but to grow into a leader on campus. We also have one of the highest University of Pittsburgh Greek Chapter GPAs, and volunteer to complete
community service on a monthly basis. Our Greek letters are worn with pride as they embody our hard work and mission statement here at the University of Pittsburgh.

3. What is the upcoming event you organized, Rep Ya City Stroll and Dance Competition?

Rep Ya City Stroll and Dance Competition is our third annual stroll and dance competition at the University of Pittsburgh. Each year’s competition has a different theme; last year’s, for example, was International Rhythms, and this year’s is Rep Ya City. We encourage all audience members to attend wearing an outfit or finding other creative ways to represent their hometown.  Strolling is a type of dance considered a Greek tradition that allows Greeks to represent themselves in the community and show off their organization’s personality and flair at parties, large gatherings, and exhibitions. The Greek organizations are required to represent a city (or cities) in their strolls. Dance Organizations will be enchanting audience members with their performance of their respective style dances.

4. Who will be performing?

There are 5 greek organizations and 5 dance groups performing. Ya’baso Dance, Controlled Chaos (Pitt’s Hip-hop dance crew), Zisha, PantheRaas, Nrityamala, Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Zeta Phi
Beta Sorority Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority Inc.

5. What will the winner receive?

There will be two winners: a winning stroll team and a winning dance team. Each winning team will receive $200.

6. Who are you raising money for? Can you tell me about this organization?

We are raising money for our national philanthropy, an organization called Girls for a Change. It is a great organization that empowers young girls to make a social change in their communities. It gives girls the ability
to live up to their full potential and to be makers of change.

7. What do you hope to accomplish through this event?

We hope to accomplish several goals through our stroll and dance competition. Firstly, we hope to raise a lot of money for our national philanthropy. Secondly, we want to educate students on campus about a different culture than their own, whether it be Greek culture or Hip-hop and Indian culture via performance of a cultural dance group or learning what stroll is. Not only is it an opportunity to expand one’s horizons, but also, hopefully, the more people are exposed to different cultures, the more open and accepting they can become. Thirdly, we hope that our competition is an effective instrument for bringing organizations and people from all walks of life together and for Greek unity. Lastly, we want everyone to have fun!
