Are you single and aware that Valentine’s Day is coming up? How couldn’t you be with the giant plastic hearts filled with over-priced chocolate and fluffy teddy bears plastered with “I love you” messages everywhere? I, for one, deliberately avoid the aisle in Rite Aid that screams, “Happy V-Day!,” because to me it just screams, “Happy You’re On Your Own Forever Day!” As if I need another reason to be reminded that I’m single. Well, I propose that this February 14th, all the single ladies in the nation embrace their freedom and celebrate flying solo!
For starters, stop moping. Get up and get out because sulking is for sure not going to help you find a man. Be more open to new experiences. Try a new restaurant once a week. Be confident in yourself for who you are. Strike up a conversation with the cute guy in your class you’ve been crushing on. What I’m saying is don’t change yourself, change your attitude.
Secondly, make it a girls’ night. What better excuse to break out a bottle (or box) of wine, a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and watch romantic comedies with your best girl friends to celebrate your wonderful freedom? So some of your friends have boyfriends, who cares? Let them enjoy their happiness and you celebrate yours. What’s worse than being single on a couple’s holiday is being in a relationship and hearing your single friends complain about how cheesy your boyfriend’s gift was or how stupid the holiday is. Don’t be one of those girls. Be happy for them because they are indeed your friends.
Finally, don’t focus on the love you don’t have, celebrate the love you do have. Your friends, family, even your pets are there and care about you, so why wish for more? You are a beautiful, independent woman and you don’t need someone there just because one day points out the fact that you don’t have a significant other. Be happy, be confident, be you.
