Relationships Are Tough, Music Can Help

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

The great Vincent Hugo once said, “Music expresses that which cannot be said and that which cannot remain silent,” and in a world where any song we please is at our fingertips, music has become one of the most accessible forms of expression. Relationships are a fact of life, and what girl hasn’t had a Taylor Swift or Adele hit come on the radio that whisked her mind away to whatever cutie has captured her attention? So maybe you’re looking for a good song to tweet some lyrics from or something to tell him how you feel, or maybe you need something to have a good cry to. We, here at Her Campus Pitt, have compiled the ultimate playlist of our favorite cliché relationship songs.

Before the first date: So, you’ve noticed him and maybe he’s noticed you, too. If not, you’re definitely ready for him to acknowledge you. We’ve got you covered. Think to these songs or send him one to listen to!

“Hey Stephen”- Taylor Swift

The lyrics: “Of all the girls tossing rocks at your window

I’ll be the one waiting there even when it’s cold.

Hey Stephen,

Boy, you might have me believing

I don’t always have to be alone.”

Why We Love it: You met him, he’s perfect for you. All he needs is a little encouragement. Taylor Swift understands and wrote a song you feel says everything you need to tell him.

“One and Only” – Adele

The lyrics: “I dare you to let me be your, your one and only

I promise I’m worthy to hold in your arms

So come on and give me the chance

To prove that I’m the one who can

Walk that mile until the end starts.”

Why We Love It: You’re talking to each other and you’re clicking and everything is perfect… but he’s not ready for a relationship. With a little patience and coaxing, anything is possible.

“Fallin’ For You”- Colbie Caillat

The Lyrics: “I’ve been spending all my time

Just thinking about you

I don’t know what to do

I think I’m fallin’ for you”

Why We Love It: He’s all you think about and it’s driving you crazy that you don’t know how he feels about you. Take a leaf out of Colbie’s book, stop your agony, and tell him how you feel!

“Realize”- Colbie Caillat

The Lyrics: “If you just realize what I just realized

Then we’d be perfect for each other,

And we’ll never find another.

Just realize what I just realized.

We’d never have to wonder if

We missed out on each other.”

Why We Love It: The sheer frustration of a guy who doesn’t realize what’s right in front of him can be maddening. Send him this. If he doesn’t understand after, it may be time to move on.

After A Wonderful Time Together: He likes you; you like him. You’ve gone out on a date or spent some time together and it’s everything you ever imagined it could be. Perfect for a tweet to show everyone you had a good time or just something to smile and sing along to, these songs bring out all the cheesiness of new love.

“Today Was a Fairytale”- Taylor Swift

The Lyrics: “But can you feel this magic in the air?

It must have been the way you kissed me

Fell in love when I saw you standing there

It must have been the way

Today was a fairytale.”

Why We Love It: One of the happiest Taylor Swift songs to date, she manages to, once again, capture the very essence of how we feel. From the exhilaration of the first kiss to the promise of seeing him again, this song makes us smile every time we hear it.

“Teenage Dream”- Katy Perry

The Lyrics: “Before you met me, I was all right

But things were kinda heavy, you brought me to life

Now every February you’ll be my valentine, valentine”

Why We Love It: The date went well and you’re over the moon about it. Things seriously could not be going better. Take a moment and bask in the glory. It’s nice to feel like you’re on top of the world.

“Head over Feet”- Alanis Morissette

The Lyrics: “You’ve already won me over in spite of me

And don’t be alarmed if I fall head over feet

Don’t be surprised if I love you for all that you are”

Why We Love It: Everything he does seems to be designed to attract you. He’s your dream guy and now he’s practically yours. Enjoy it! Then send him this song so he realizes just how much you want him.

In a Relationship: Because what’s a relationship without a song? If you’re looking for one or just want to hear something mushy and full of love, this is the category for you.

“All of Me” – John Legend

The Lyrics: “Give your all to me

I’ll give my all to you

You’re my end and my beginning

Even when I lose I’m winning”

Why We Love It: First of all, could John Legend’s voice be any more soothing? But really, you’re together and you can’t imagine things without him anymore. Commitment can be beautiful, and this song definitely does it justice. Not to mention, it’s a great song for slow-dancing.

“Lucky”- Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz

The Lyrics: “I keep you with me in my heart

You make it easier when life gets hard

Lucky I’m in love with my best friend”

Why We Love It: This is essentially the ultimate dream. You and your best friend realizing that you’re perfect for each other. You are literally each other’s world and there’s no awkwardness because you were already super close beforehand. If this song doesn’t make your heart soar, I don’t know what does.

The Break-Up: Where there are relationships, there are break-ups. It’s a sad but true fact of life. Not every relationship lasts, although I firmly believe if it’s meant to be, it will be. In the meantime, if you need to cry (or scream) or just let off some steam to a song that says everything you can’t, this is for you.

“Bad Blood”- Taylor Swift

The Lyrics: “Now we got problems

And I don’t think we can solve them

You made a really deep cut

And, baby, now we got bad blood”

Why We Love It: He hurt you and now he’s going to pay for it. Once again, Taylor Swift pulls through for all of us ladies. Let yourself be angry, and once it’s out of your system, you’ll be much better able to move on and put him in the past.

“The Scientist”- Coldplay

The Lyrics: “Nobody said it was easy

Oh it’s such a shame for us to part

Nobody said it was easy

No one ever said it would be so hard

I’m going back to the start”

Why We Love It: Break-ups don’t have to be permanent and sometimes you feel at fault for what happened. It’s okay to want them back and it’s okay to listen to this song on repeat and search for the inspiration to try to fix things.

“Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”- P!nk

The Lyrics: “I think I’ve finally had enough

I think I maybe think too much

I think this might be it for us

Blow me one last kiss”

Why We Love It: You go, girl! You’ve made the near impossible decision of moving on. If you get nervous that you’ll have a hard time totally removing him from your life, listen to this song and let it fuel your strength.
