In New York, Fashion Week stands for everything that is current within the fashion industry. This year, Mercedes-Benz held fashion week from February 9th through February 17th.

With the recent high temperatures in Pittsburgh, students have already started wearing some of the spring’s hottest trends inspired by the 2011 New York runways.  Some of the major looks I’ve noticed on the runways of Fashion Week include: sheer fabrics, floral prints, blazers, neutral, nude, or citrus color palettes, denim, and comfortably structured clothing (to name a few!).  These are easily versatile trends that any girl can sport around campus in her own way.

First, the blazer is certainly a spring essential.  Perfect for both day and night, it adds a little class to any outfit.  During the day, a light-colored blazer with a t-shirt and jeans makes an outfit seem casual while making you look like you didn’t just roll out of bed.  At night, the blazer can keep you warm in the spring breeze and you don’t have to worry about losing your jacket at a party.  A popular runway blazer was designer Akris’ denim blazer, which mixed two trends in one.

I saw many girls bring out their floral printed tops and dresses this past week as well. Many of them also paired their floral dresses with cowboy-inspired boots for a relaxed and flirty look.  For girls who don’t want to look too girly, floral and leather creates a great spring style.  For example, a floral blouse and a leather jacket is a perfect look for a dinner or a party.  Or, you can pair a floral dress with combat boots for an edgier look.  Overall, floral seamlessly adds a little femininity to any outfit.

One of the most popular styles that I saw on the runway and in great numbers on campus is oversized and relaxed fitting clothing.  This style looks great on any girl and is perfect for class or a more casual party.  Michael Kors’ spring 2011 collection showed off this style with relaxed and flowing dresses.  As students, many of us love just throwing on a sweatshirt and sweats and heading to class.  But, with this new spring trend, it will be easy to stock up on both comfortable and trendy clothes that we can pretend are sweatshirts.  An oversized logo t-shirt like ones from Urban Outfitters or American Apparel, for example, is perfect.  Or one of these shirts paired with dark jeans and heals is an adorable and comfy outfit for a party.

Finally, it’s easy to bring the New York runway fashion to your wardrobe through color.  Neutral and nude colors are popular and look natural and elegant for a night with friends.  During the day, especially, citrus colors illuminate outfits and make the campus that much brighter.

Clearly, there are numerous ways for us to get inspired by high fashion and bring it to campus.  And with so many different looks, it’s easy to turn these trends into looks that express our individuality. Spring is quickly approaching, so it’s time to revamp our closets!
