Love locks have been appearing on the Schenley Bridge over the last four years, showcasing the love Pittsburgh-ers have for each other and allowing the expression of that love to be artistic. There are locks that are glittered, beaded, bedazzled, and everything else you can think of. One of my personal favorites is decorated to look like a big, glittering sunflower. Some are there for couple’s anniversaries, with either professionally or personally crafted dates. Some couples have even put locks there four years in a row! The best part about the bridge, however, is that it’s not Paris; it has more than romantic couples showing their appreciation for one another, right here in Pittsburgh! There are friends, full families of five, sorority sisters, grandparents and grandchildren, and locks people dedicated to themselves. This photo is a good overview of the mass of metal that has popped up, but the best part of the Schenley padlocks is the specific relationships in our community that they show. They are all different, all positive, and are permanently put in Oakland as a reminder that their love exists around us.
