After having the chance to sit down and talk to campus representative, Allie Hosinski, I got a good peek into the workings of the newest college social app, Friendsy. With nearly 100,000 users at over 200 campuses across the U.S., Friendsy is one of the many popular up and coming social apps, but Friendsy is a little bit different…
The app creators, Mike and John, created this app as a way to make friends with little pressure. After they became friends at a baseball game by chance, they realized someone has to make the first step and reach out to make a connection, friendship, or any relationship for that matter. Friendsy is designed to create a safe and no stress place to meet people.
The online app allows you to browse other college students on your campus or even campuses across the U.S.! Having many differences from other online social apps, Friendsy creates a safer environment for its users. One large contributor to this is that all Friendsy users must sign up and log in with their college email account. The app verifies that the student is in fact a part of the university and then more easily allows you to explore connections at your University.
The app pulls up pictures of college students in your area, or specifically on your campus, and you have the option to notify them that you want to “go on a date”, “hook up”, or “become friends” with them. If you are both a match, you can start a conversation, and you can also send them hints about your major, year, or school within the university, so they can more easily search you and decide if they want to be a match. The hints feature gives you the ability to be as bold or as coy as you’d like, unlike many other apps out right now.
Some other cool features of Friendsy include a new compliment feature and the online chat room. You can now anonymously compliment someone at any time but don’t worry; the compliments are monitored, so no one can harass you online. The chat room now allows you to anonymously chat with other anonymous users on your campus or across the U.S. The online chat room, as well as the personal chat room with your matches, gives you the option of prompts. If you can’t seem to find something to chat about, Friendsy can lend a hand!
Friendsy is meant to create an easier way to make friends; those O-week friends don’t last forever! Friendsy is a low-stress way to make connections around your campus, especially for shyer students. “It’s really what you make of it”, says campus rep., Allie. “Its biggest difference from Tinder and other apps is the anonymous aspect of it… You can keep sending hints to someone if you’d really like to be that straight forward”, she laughs. “It elevates some of the pressure of one swipe and then you’re disappointed,” we jokingly said.
Get swiping and go download the app in either the App Store or on Google Play! Keep your eyes open for posters about Friendsy around campus and about their upcoming events. Allie got me excited about the free stuff they’ll be handing out at their upcoming tabling event (shot glasses, koozies, tumblers, pong balls, sunglasses, and much more). I also heard talk of a Photo Booth on campus!
