Have you ever texted someone you know you shouldn’t while you were out at a party? (You’re a liar if you said no.) At one point or another, I think we have all been guilty of sending what’s known as the dreaded “drunk text.” Usually, these text messages are sent while we are not at our, um, best and are to those we would probably never text while sober. These messages usually look something like “hey qhat aer yiou up tp?” Though there are no fool-proof ways to prevent these occurrences from happening, here are some ways that you can at least attempt to prevent that next morning regret.
First and foremost: never ever go to your friends and ask them what to do. That chemistry partner of yours with the crystal blue eyes who dresses so unbelievably well? Obviously, your friends are going to tell you that texting him at one o’clock on a Saturday morning is the best idea, like, ever. Just like they told you it was a good idea to take another shot… and then another. Though these decisions may seem like good ideas at the time, in the long run they will do more harm than good. To avoid awkwardness with you and your chem partner for the rest of the semester, do yourself a favor and save the texts for when you can show off your chemistry knowledge instead of being that girl.
If you know that you will be under the influence of your friends’ opinions (like how you’re probably under the influence of Jack Daniels) try changing the names of people you would like to avoid texting in your contact list. If you’re successful, then problem averted. However, just make sure you write down who is who for the next morning.
For those of you that read through this article so far and laughed at how this couldn’t possibly stop you from drunk texting, have no fear. There’s an app for that… literally. Welcome to 2013, where apps such as Don’t Dial! exist to solve our drunk texting dilemmas. These apps work by hiding phone numbers and even email addresses for a set amount of time to avoid doing something you’ll later regret. These apps claim that you can go out on the town without ever having to worry again.
As hard as it is to fight the urge to text after you’ve had one too many drinks, learn from personal experience: drunk texts will get you nowhere. You’ll wake up the next morning cringing as you scroll through your messages from the night before. Come on girl, you and I both know you’re better than that. The real way to impress anyone, especially potential love interests, is not through incoherently formulated text message. Trust me. Try your best to gather that same courage that being drunk gives you while sober and impress that chem partner of yours with a witty joke, like, “What do you call iron blowing in the wind? Fe-breeze.” You’ll live happily ever after and drunk text free.
