I feel like it’s every girl’s dream to attend Fashion Week… or at least it’s mine. For those of you who do not know what Fashion Week is, it is a week-long event dedicated to the world’s top designers who put on runway shows to show off their latest collections. These shows take place all over the world, and I was lucky enough to be able to go to New York to experience it this year. It took place February 6th-13th and featured amazing designers like DKNY, Lacoste, and BCBG–just to name a few. I have envisioned myself, ever since my days of playing dress-up, being able to attend Fashion Week one day, strutting around in the latest designer collections and going to all of the shows with the biggest celebrities. Though my sense of what style is has evolved into more than just designer brands, my dream of attending Fashion Week has stayed the same. So, when I got news that I would have the opportunity to attend New York’s Fall 2014 Fashion Week on its second day, I was convinced I was dreaming. I hopped on a plane, said “see yinz later” to Pittsburgh, packed my best outfit (which obviously took hours to plan), and traveled home for my exciting Fashion Week adventure!
1:12 P.M – My best friend Kerry and I frantically get ready, approving each other’s outfits and making sure every strand of hair is perfectly curled. We make ourselves look as chic and Fashion Week ready as we possibly can, and head for the bus stop. Though it wasn’t the most glamorous way to arrive in the fabulous city of Manhattan, it was good enough. We could not wait to get to Lincoln Center.
2:30 P.M – After a little trouble with the subway system (I thought it said uptown, not downtown… my bad) we finally arrive near Lincoln Center. We walk over to the building designated for the shows and pass various women obviously dressed for our same destination. Our excitement grows even more as we climb the steps to Lincoln Center.
3:00 P.M – Upon meeting my family friend Elayna who works for Lincoln Center (and is awesome), we find out that we might be able to get into the Rebecca Minkoff show! I couldn’t believe it. Kerry had even come prepared toting her own Rebecca Minkoff bag! Were we actually going to get to see a show? I was beyond excited. Kerry and I followed Elayna past all types of security and into the line for standing room at the Rebecca Minkoff show. We were let in after what felt like years, and seeing the runway was unlike anything I could have imagined. Cameras adorned the end of the runway by the dozens, and there were all types of people wearing everything from head-to-toe sequins to ruby red pantsuits. The lights dimmed, and out came a DJ and live singer. As the models strutted down the runway carrying various bags and sporting elegant jackets in fall’s “it” colors, the cameras were flashing and the music was amazing. The whole show was mesmerizing, and it was honestly a dream come true. Though it was over after what felt like five minutes, it was by far one of the best experiences of my life (so far at least).
4:00 P.M – Elayna left us for some work she had to do, so Kerry and I did what we do best and people-watched in the public area. We had an Olivia Palermo sighting and it took a lot for me not to freak out… she’s even more fabulous in person than she is in the magazines! After we felt that we had people-watched enough inside, we decided to go back outside and people-watch even more. We met a girl who was drawing right outside of the venue and found out it was her first time attending Fashion Week, just like us! We saw girls standing outside of Lincoln Center “modeling” as if cameras were going to come up any moment and take their picture. So, Kerry and I decided to do the same thing, except we were each other’s photographers. I know what you must be thinking… No, we don’t have any previous modeling experience!
5:00 P.M – As fun as modeling for each other was, we decided we had taken enough selfies, and got something to eat. All that ogling over new fashion made us so hungry! We walked a few blocks to a restaurant recommended by Elayna called Rosa Mexicano. Kerry and I are obsessed with guacamole, and we even got to watch them make it right in front of us! We also found out through social media that we were standing right behind Victoria Justice, Zendaya, and Bella Thorne at the Rebecca Minkoff show… and we had no idea (but we still thought it was awesome). It was a perfect meal to end a perfect day.
7:30 P.M – After figuring out the subway the right way this time, we catch a bus home. We did very little talking… we were both so tired! Not going to lie, I think I fell asleep for five minutes (but so did Kerry so it’s okay). We arrive back home and go right to bed, our dreams filled with the events of our day.
Being able to attend Fashion Week was an amazing experience. I love how excited people get when I tell them my experience with Fashion Week and show everyone all of the pictures that I took. It’s a memory that I was so glad I got to make with one of my best friends and can share with others. Hopefully one day soon I’ll be able to attend Fashion Week in Paris as a big name journalist! A girl can dream, right?
