HC Pitt’s Guide to Off-Campus Housing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

We’re approaching that time of year when students begin to look for housing for next year. Although it seems early, many landlords and apartment buildings have already opened leasing applications, so it’s important to plan ahead and act fast! If you’re considering moving off-campus next year, here are our tips to do so, as well as some reviews.

“Currently I live in a 4 bedroom house in North Oakland and I really love the area! It’s right on the bus line and it’s so nice having a kitchen and my own room after dorming!”

“I live at the One on Centre and there are pros and cons. The amenities are great: a rooftop pool, hot tub, study lounge, Starbucks coffee machine, gym with a Peloton bike and a sauna! The location is also nice because North Oakland feels safe, and there are lots of food options around (including a Dunkin’ on the first floor)! Also each room has a private bathroom and walk-in closet! However, some cons are that the rent is very expensive and they tack on extra prices like $100/month for parking or an extra fee to get a room with a view of Cathy. Also the elevators are almost always broken or take forever. Just some things to consider!”

“I have been living in Bates Hill Apartments in South O since last year! Our 2 bedroom is small but so cozy and clean, with an absolutely perfect location (and even a cute view of Cathy)! Our building has never felt unsafe or rowdy, and I will truly miss living here when I move to a different place next year!”

“The biggest con of my previous off-campus housing was my landlord!! I had such a terrible man who really ruined my roommates and I entire year living in our house. So, I 100% advise everyone to look up reviews of landlords before deciding to rent from them! If my roommates and I had done this, it would’ve saved us a year of unnecessary stress and anxiety.”

“Right now I’m renting from Walnut Capital and I can’t recommend them enough! They’re so attentive and helpful, and their properties are really nice!”

“I am currently renting from Palmieri Property Management and I really recommend them. They always resolve any issues right away, and the house is really nice and recently renovated.”
