For our fellow Pitt students, here are some class recommendations for the upcoming semesters! Of course, if you know us, it is on brand that they are mostly Literature and Writing Classes.

FR 0012: French Kiss

This seems to be a common favorite at Pitt because it is so unique (I mean, you literally make a fake dating profile for the midterm). French Kiss has a very light workload and can potentially satisfy two gen eds at once. I would definitely recommend it if you have a busy semester and want something more chill! The literature and films we learn about are interesting and culturally diverse, so there’s a good mix of learning and entertainment.

PSY 0105: Introduction to Social Psychology

I took this class with Karina Schumann for my Psychology major and she was amazing! She really made things easy to understand by supplementing concepts with studies and practical applications. You’ll find the material engaging if you like learning about human behavior and unconscious influences. I love classes that make me excited to learn and this was my favorite psych class I’ve taken at Pitt!

ENGLIT 0610: Women and Literature

One of our writers, Emma, says: “This went towards my GSWS minor and also my literature gen ed! I’m still taking it but I really like it so far because the content is just so interesting. We look at the ‘monstrous feminine’ in literature and how female monsters are created by society. We’ve read books like Frankenstein and Coraline and watched movies like Carrie so it doesn’t feel like work when I’m doing it. I would recommend it as a lit gen ed if the topic interests you but just know there will be a lot of reading and writing outside of class (like any writing course) and you need to participate in class discussions to get a good grade. It’s really changed how I see female characters in media though!”

ENGFLM 1703: Gender and Film

HC Pitt’s Chapter President, Lauren, took this for her Film and Media Studies minor: “I absolutely ADORE this class! Dr. Dana Och has quickly become one of my favorite professors and I look forward to this class every single week. I’ve learned so much and everything we’ve watched has been AWESOME! I would definitely recommend taking film analysis before this (I think it’s a prerequisite anyways) but if you’re into film I cannot recommend this enough.”

ENGLIT 1262: African American Science Fiction

Lauren took this class for her English Literature major: “If you have any chance to take a class with Dr. Geoffrey Glover TAKE IT. He is one of the kindest, most knowledgeable and enthusiastic professors and I’ve loved every class I’ve taken with him. The subject matter in this class is so fascinating and reminds me every day of why I chose to be an English major.”

Editor’s note: This class is by far my favorite part of my week, I highly recommend any of Geoffrey’s classes! – Alison

eNGLIT 0626: Science Fiction

Alison, one of our editors, says: “I took this class for my literature gen ed and liked it so much I started an English Lit minor!”

ENGWRT 0610: Introduction to Journalism & Nonfiction

One of HC Pitt’s writers, Julia, took this for her Media & Professional Communications major: “It’s an intro class so no prereqs, was very discussion/partner work based so I felt like I got a lot of feedback and improved a lot as a writer and worked on a lot of different styles.”

AFRCNA 0536: 20th Century African American Woman History

Another one of our writers, Lila took this for her History major: “Loved the class, very very introspective and intriguing. The professor (Dr. Shawn Alfonso-wells) is my everything, she genuinely cares about her students and about teaching.”

SOC 0007: Social Problems

Sienna, a writer, took this for her Sociology major: “This class is super interesting! You learn about various social issues in depth. It’s interesting and not super difficult so I recommend it to anyone looking for a good soc elective:)”

BIOSC 0150: Foundations of Biology 1

Kendall, also a writer, took this for her Environmental Science major: “TAKE ERICA MCGREEVY!!! Her class is so so good! The organization is perfect, she gives you so much practice, extra credit opportunities on tests and generally explains things so well! She truly makes sure you understand the content! Also, biology is so much fun! It’s so applicable to your life and interesting in my opinion!”

Renee Arlotti is a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a writer for the Pitt chapter of Her Campus and likes writing about book and music recommendations, fashion, and mental health.
