Grammy Recap or Shall We Say – the Adele’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Award Show season is something I look forward to watching. With football over and baseball not yet begun, it gives us something to look forward to on those lazy Sunday nights. From the red carpet to the very last performance, the Grammy’s are one of my favorites. The performances are superior to those of other awards shows, and there always seems to be something to talk about the next day. If you missed the big event and feel a little out of the loop – don’t you worry – I’m here to fill you in on the best and the worst of the evening. So let’s start from the top shall we?

As I’m sure you already know –the death of pop sensation Whitney Houston has hit the nation hard. On the eve of the Grammy’s, Whitney was pronounced dead, the cause of death is still unreported. Her eighteen-year-old daughter was also rushed to the hospital on Sunday morning – suffering from panic attacks at the news of her mother’s passing. Naturally, the Grammy’s seemed to center around celebrating her legacy. With a breath-taking performance by Jennifer Hudson of “I Will Always Love You”, it was strikingly obvious that Whitney will be greatly missed by her fellow colleagues as well as all her fans.

The big winner last night was, of course, Adele. With six nominations, she was in for a night of either great joy or great disappointment. Thankfully the stars worked in her favor – and she waltzed out of there with all six awards in her hands – including the coveted Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Even the commercials seemed to know she was a winner – with Target advertising the record-charting album. Adele also preformed last evening – a stellar performance of the award-winning single “Rolling in the Deep”.

The Foo Fighters were also big winners last night, taking home four awards. Taylor Swift followed in third, taking home two. Both the Foo Fighters and Swift gave great performances as well.

But on to the red carpet, in my opinion was a little disappointing. My worst dressed nominee? Well that honor belongs to Fergie – who dawned a Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture gown. Lace is a risk in itself, but when you add this burnt orange color to the mix, as well as some shady black lingerie underneath, she looked more like a Halloween costume gone bad than a classy woman of the red carpet.

Next up? Taylor Swift – big winner last night with two awards. Taylor sported a nude silk mermaid dress by Zuhair Murad. Although it was quite a risk for Taylor, I think she pulled it off. I do believe a different hairstyle and a bright lip color may have been a better choice for rounding out the outfit, but overall, I think she looked fantastic.

Some fans were even renaming the Grammy’s “The Adele’s” via Twitter last night, as this next best dressed nominee goes out to the woman in black. Adele wore her classic look – black dress, fresh face with a red lip, and blown out hair. This sparkletastic Giorgio Armani boatneck gown with three-quarter sleeves hugged her curves in all the right places – making her look like the queen that she was last night.

Finally, my favorite look was of a non-nominee. Carrie Underwood looked fantastic in a long-sleeved Gomez-Gracia gown of embroidered sequins. Off-set with a black hand-bag, and hair pulled back off her face, Carrie was a vision of perfection on the red carpet.

What was your favorite or least favorite look or performance of the night?
