The Go-To Style Guide for When You’re Feeling Lazy but Still Want to Look Good

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

It’s starting to get to that time of the semester when, quite frankly, you’re starting to give less of a crap about what you wear. Unless you’re like me and every day is a battle between style and comfort, that perfect pink silk romper you found at Francesca’s is getting a backseat to that sweatshirt your ex is never going to get back. That perfectly ripped jean skirt? Pass. I’ll take those sweatpants I bought at the university store freshman year. But fear not, there IS a method to the madness of dressing stylish, yet wearing an outfit so comfortable you could curl up in a ball and take a nap in it.

One of my go-to pieces is a t-shirt dress. Not only does it take approximately two seconds to throw on, it pairs well with different accessories. Add a scarf for comfort or a statement necklace for some edge. Either boots or Vans look good with it. For colder days, I prefer to wear leg warmers under boots. I also have a token sweater dress in my closet for events where I need to look good, but am too lazy to put too much thought into my wardrobe choices.

A poncho or oversized sweater can also make for a trendy look. Plus, they’re just SO comfortable. Not many people go for the poncho look, so if you want to stand out a bit or stray form the norm a little, they’re definitely a choice piece to have in your closet.

Leggings are definitely a staple for any lazy girl’s wardrobe. Jeggings are pretty comfortable too. You have the look of jeans without the discomfort. Since they’re form-fitting, they match well with either a loose shirt or a sweater. If you’re going for a more athletic look, a sweatshirt with a tongue-in-cheek statement on it (like “nap queen”) and sneakers will do just fine. My go-to look usually includes a plain shirt with either a jacket or cardigan over it and boots like the outfit above.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to wear sweatpants without looking like you just rolled out of bed. It’s more a matter of whether you’re pairing it with a flattering top or a senior class t-shirt from 2011. Avoid ones that look two sizes too big on you.

Another trick I have is pairing a long-sleeved shirt with a vest. It makes me feel like I’m about to go skiing in Aspen…or, you know, wherever people who are coordinated enough to ski properly go.

Rompers can also be pretty comfortable depending on what material they are. They are also pretty easy to throw on. A sweater or open front cardigan goes well with one for when it gets colder outside.

All in all, dressing comfortably without sacrificing style is definitely doable. You just need to be a little creative. Even one or two statement pieces, a bulky necklace or an intricately patterned sweater can really transform a look.
