Girls Who Run the (Music) World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Biggame back again with some solid new music. This time I’m going to introduce some of the best and largely unknown female music artists in the music industry. Many of these women are currently working on albums and EP’s – so when they blow up you can say you heard of them first.

Banks

Jillian Banks, a London-based Los Angeles native started singing and songwriting at age 15. Now 25, her songs are featured in national Victoria’s Secret ads. All it took was two EP’s and six songs in 2013 for Banks to take over the UK; and now she’s headed for American soil. Check out her jams, “Wicked Games,” “Change” and “Before I Ever Met You.”

WE ARE TWIN

Although Nicolas Balachandran is the producer of WE ARE TWIN, Gabi Christine brings the voice and identity to the duo. Their cross between blues and jazz vocals mixed with modern electro synth-pop production connects the past and present in a way guaranteed to please any listener. Check out their self-titled debut EP featuring the banger “The Way We Touch.”

Jhene Aiko

These days Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo, or simply Jhené, is every Hip Hop artist’s go-to female vocalist. She’s worked with Drake, Big Sean, Wale, Kendrick Lamar and the rest of Black Hippy—and even got her start working with B2K. Remember them? Now she’s venturing on her own, making a name for herself with a new EP “Sail Out.” Give her new single “Bed Piece Ft. Childish Gambino” a listen.

Gems

Lindsay Pitts, the lead singer and multi-instrumentalist of this Washington D.C. based group, only started making music two years ago. A couple of years later they’ve definitely honed their hazy melancholy sound. They’re one of the few artists attempting to make a dynamic auditory and visual experience, and this is apparent if you look at their Instagram account. Go grab their debut EP, Medusa, and bump songs like “Ephemera” and “Pegasus.”

Betty Who

Only 22 years old, RCA Record’s brand new vocalist Jessica Anne Newham is a force to be reckoned with. She independently released her newest EP, The Movement, free to download. It is packed from start to finish with energetic, party-starting hits. Betty is currently in NYC working on her debut album, which is scheduled for a 2014 release. Fingers crossed. Listen her record “Somebody Loves You.”

Treat yourself to some musical Femme Fatales and tune in next time.

Listen. Learn. Love.
