Girls’ Take On Chest Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Chest hair on a man could be one of those “make it or break it” deals for many girls when it comes time to hit the sheets.  Despite our love and trust in Mother Nature, she does sometimes throw a curve ball at the very personal and individually articulated judgment of the male physique. Does chest hair signify manliness and maturity in your partner or does it hold claim for strictly shirt on make-out sessions?

I spoke to some ladies on Pitt’s campus to see what they thought about this abstract topic.  Junior Kimberly Shook says, “I don’t mind it. When it comes to physical attraction, my man’s chest is not of main concern.” I can’t help but to agree with Shook.  In terms of chest hair—I totally dig it—I find the manly asset sexy and a subtle reminder that my man’s chest hair is one of many facets separating him from the boys. Generally speaking, as long as the hair is tamed, and it’s not the breeding grounds for any type of sweat pool, the hair can stay.  However, as I’m sure many of us have seen before, there are some men who attack the shaved chest look.  This look is unique.  It has the potential to be clean and suave, or in the unfortunate event, full of razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and thick, itchy stubble.  This look is usually an attempt to rid of all chest hair. Our very own Olympic stars Michael Phelps and Ryan Lotche do it well.  It is a difficult look to conquer, but I think most women will agree, if you can do it like Phelps and Lotche, we support your clean efforts.

On the other hand, a student who would like to remain anonymous loathes a hairy chest.  She reported, “A hairy chest is gross.  I’d much rather a bare body where I can see his muscles and abs.”  Not all men will grow chest hair.  There are many men out there, both young and old, that will never sprout much of anything on their chests.  Whether it is a part of their gene pool or just the luck of the draw, some of our men will remain hairless for life—and if you eek at the sight of hair—go find these guys.  It can be an intimidating attraction, but don’t shy away from the hair at first glance.  It may be a new turn-on unbeknownst to your past likes and physical trends.

As women, we will never be familiar with what it is like to deal with this sort of hair maintenance, but we will most likely be the ones with the loudest opinions.  Remember, boys can be both self-conscious and sensitive despite some arrogant and ambitious attitudes.  For all the time-consuming efforts that girls put into their physical presence, it is not the end of the world to ask your man to put some time into his daily-beautified routine.  If the hair is the only thing taking away from hot and steamy attraction, let him know.  I’m sure he’d love to work a little bit if it means keeping you around.
