Dylan Scheidt: Rapper and Aspiring Med School Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Name: Dylan Scheidt

Year: Junior

Major: Biology

HC: Your music on Spotify and ITunes is under the artist name YDS – what is that?

DS: My music on Spotify is under YDS which is a group, made of me and my friend from home.

HC: Do you make your own beats?

DS: Yes I do. If I’m producing the beat and mixing everything myself, it takes about an hour or two to make the beat, mix the beat, make the song, and then mix it all together. So all in all like 6 or 8 hours. On top of that I never feel like I’m finished with a song. I like to go back and change things and constantly make it better.

HC: Where do you record, at home or in a studio?

DS: I have my own setup, so I can do it at home.

HC: How would you describe your music?

DS: Explicit, but I like to think anyone can listen to it. My song on iTunes is kind of a party song, but my other songs are more the type where you need to sit down and actually listen to grasp all of the concepts I’m talking about.

HC: When did you start getting involved with making music?

DS: I feel like I was chosen; I didn’t choose the game, it chose me. At twelve I started joking with my friends and rapping as an Amish character Jebediah about stuff like Mennonites.

HC: So how did you go from Jebediah to where you are now?

DS: Basically I kept doing it, but I wanted people to take me seriously, so I dropped the Amish thing. I went by the name Shade and put out some music, then friends started asking me for more and it sort of took off from there.

HC: Has anything cool happened to you because of your music?

DS: I got to do a show with the New Boyz and Mike Stud, and then I got to talk to Mike Stud and hang out with him after the show which was pretty cool.

HC: Have you ever thought about dropping out of school and pursuing a career in music?

DS: Yes. My plan right now is to become a multiplatinum selling artist, but my backup plan is to graduate and go to med school. So basically college is my backup. I’d like to take a year off after I get my bachelor’s degree and try to pursue it.
