“I am thinking of taking a class next semester with a Dr. Lisa Brush. Know her?” Anyone who HAS had the experience of taking one of Dr. Brush’s Sociology classes would react along the lines of, “She’s awesome! Take her,” “She’s hilarious and her classes are cool,” or just a plain “Ugh! Love her.” While we students tend to be vague with our descriptions of professors when it comes to recommeding them to other students or not, I’d be shocked to find someone on Pitt’s campus who regretted taking her class.

Teaching classes in the Sociology Department of the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Brush attended the University of Connecticut and then earned her Doctorate at the University of Wisconsin.

Her interets in Sociology and usually fall into these categories.

  • Sex & Gender
  • Political Sociology
  • Violence Against Women
  • Social Policy
  • Feminist Theories
  • Class Analysis
  • Cultural Studies

Dr. Brush manages to create a comfortable environment in which she never fails to bring up controverisal subjects, challenging her students ideas, beliefs, and thoughts as well as the ability to articulate them verbally and through thier writing.

She finds that perfect balance to create the type of relationship in which she can joke around with her students, often causing sudden bursts of laughter with her witty play on words, but can also discuss serious and, at times arguably uncomfortable policies, findings, or ideas within the world of Sociology.

No matter what one’s major is, this is a professor who can challenge your conventional ways of thinking and leave you feeling refreshed and able to confidently say, “I learned something.”

And isn’t that what we’re supposed to be doing here?

Derilyn Devlin graduates from Pitt in April 2012. She is excited to leave the University of Pittburgh Her Campus to Mandy Velez and Claire Peltier as the new campus correspondents.
