I found Lindsey Hunter’s small business on where else but Twitter one day. It immediately caught my eye, not only because of the delicate, original pieces of jewelry, but the story behind them. All of her material is recycled and the jewelry is vintage! Still, living the life of a college student, the most luxurious items I can afford always come from a spot marked ‘Clearance,’ so I was skeptical to fall too in love with any item. Suddenly, my eyes hit the prices. “Less than $10?! Whoa. I could definitely give up pizza and beer for a night for this…”

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Fashion Merchandising in 2006 and I quickly got a job as a Visual Merchandiser for a popular department store. After a few years I decided to go back to school and pursue a degree in Medicine. I am currently in my last year and will be graduating with a degree in Nutrition. As for my personal life I am happily married to a supportive husband and we have a 7 month old baby boy.

2) Can you tell us what exactly Creative Customology is?
I started Recycled Couture shortly after my son was born. I have always been working or in school so it was a nice change to be at home. It didn’t take long for my creative side to take over. I feel my designs are fresh and new. It takes someone with a bold personality or someone who isn’t afraid to take risks to wear my pieces. I love the freedom I have with my designs. I only use recycled fabrics and/or vintage jewelry to create each piece . I design each piece to be unique without attaching an outrageous price tag.

4) Do you work from home?
Currently I have a studio set up at home, but I am in the process of looking for retail spaces.

5) How do people find out about your business?
I take orders through my etsy shop and for local customers I often meet them if they need a custom piece in a hurry.

6) What’s your favorite part about doing this?
I have always wanted to be a designer, and when I started making jewelry I told myself that if I could just sell one piece, I’m doing something right. I am amazed by the overwhelming response and all that I have accomplished in such a short amount of time.

 7) What inspires your designs?
When I go to sleep at night it’s like my mind is piecing together a puzzle. I am able to piece together different colors/shapes/sizes and that’s how a majority of my necklaces have been created.

8) How long do pieces take to create?
It depends on the amount of flowers it takes to create a necklace. If I am in a hurry it can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, but I like to take my time with each piece.

9) What are your plans for the future regarding Creative Customology?
I would really like to open up my own boutique. I have been looking at various locations and hopefully I will have something by spring.
