Calling All Foodies: Spoon University Coming To Pitt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Do you enjoy looking at ‘food porn’ Instagrams, binge-watching episodes of Chopped, and trying new restaurants? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will be happy to learn that this fall, Spoon University, an online publication covering all things food, is coming to Pitt!

Spoon University is currently the only food website for college students, written by college students. It was created to provide students with information about food that they often lack. Ramen noodles and cereal bars unfortunately dominate the aisles of college food stores, encouraging students to think that there is no longer pleasure in eating. This is where Spoon University steps in. Spoon aims to get students to look at food as more than just sustenance by providing them with dining hall hacks, healthy eating tips, recipes, and reviews of off-campus restaurants.

Spoon was created at Northwestern University in 2012 by students Mackenzie Barth and Sarah Adler, who wanted to change the way college students eat. They quickly expanded their network and currently, Spoon University reaches 45 campuses nationwide and it continues to grow! Spoon provides students with such an important resource that allows them to develop a better relationship with food.

Many students at Pitt, especially freshman, are likely to indulge in the unhealthy options the dining hall offers them because they don’t know what else there is to eat. Undergraduates living off-campus are also often unaware of all the quick and healthy meals that they can prepare in their apartments, so as a result, they often resort to Pop-tarts and Easy Mac- quick fixes to fill them up. Not to mention, many Pitt students think that the best off-campus restaurants are the ones on Forbes Avenue- such as Chipotle and Panera. This is because students are unaware of all the hidden gems located around different neighborhoods in Pittsburgh such as Shadyside, Bloomfield, and the Strip District. Yet with the introduction of Spoon University at Pitt, students will no longer have these problems! Spoon members will inform students to help students change the way they look at food. It will be the only club at Pitt revolved around all things food, and will create a diverse community of ‘foodies’!

Since Spoon University is just getting started at Pitt, applications are soon being accepted for a variety of positions including an editor-in-chief, a business/marketing director, as well as a photography director. Each of these positions will also need a team of students including editors, writers, photographers, videographers, and a marketing/event planning team. All students at Pitt are encouraged to apply. Spoon University has such a large network of students who are all very different, so it is okay if you are not a “foodie” necessarily. There are many available positions that must be filled to make Spoon University a success at Pitt!

Spoon University has changed the way college students look at food and has helped so many individuals become more aware of what they are eating. Becoming a part of Spoon at Pitt would not only provide students with a great experience for their future, but it would allow them to be part of a food movement that will positively impact college students relationships with food around the nation!
