Britney Spears’ Lessons for Collegiettes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

With new pairs of legs like Ariana Grande, JLo, Iggy Azalea, and Lady Gaga, it’s easy to forget the original queen of pop. Fiercer than JLo, blonder than Iggy, and with more diva in her little finger than Queen Bey, Britney Spears still tops my charts with some of her classic, catchy hits that can be applied to the regular-old collegiette’s life. Here are five Britney classics as a start:

1.  Baby, One More Time!

Britney rocks the sexiest school girl uniform in history and don’t we all wish we could pull off such a trick?! This song takes me back to every class where I’ve been distracted by that cute guy sitting two rows away from me – but, unlike me, Britney acts on her emotions and busts out dance moves in the school hallway and gym. This is basically the internal monologue I (and most college girls) have in boring classes where guy-watching is the only pastime.

2. Oops…I Did It Again!

Haven’t we all accidently led a guy on and realized too late that he thought we were serious? Or, some of us, like me, imagine having that much power over a guy. Regardless, Britney shows us that we are unique and that uniqueness is what draws guys to us like moths to a flame. The way I see it, if Britney in a red lobster body suit and static-heavy hair could persuade an astronaut to bring her the jewel from the Titanic, I should be able to get a guy to have a cup of coffee with me, no strings attached!

3. Womanizer

This song is arguably one of Britney’s most powerful, with an insistent chorus and strong, feminist lyrics. Haven’t we all felt frustrated at guys for being such ‘players’? College guys, while arguably more mature than high school guys, still have that regrettable tendency to “keep their options open.” Well, Britney puts our frustration into action in Womanizer, as she investigates her boyfriend’s (he’s super hot too, props to the director of that music video!) fidelity. Talk about turning the tables and kicking some serious butt. And bonus points for the innovative disguises. You go, Britney!

4. Slave 4 U

This is the absolute embodiment of the transformation college girls go through when they finally hit the college bar town for the first time. While not all of us are brave enough to don a neon pink bra and skinny jeans with an unnervingly sexual belt to the club, we can attest to the feeling that we feel powerful and incredibly sexy when we are dancing and guys can’t keep their eyes off us.

5. Toxic

All of us have felt like we’re too nice (or too naughty, in some cases), but Britney shows us that we can be both. This song is highly applicable to the toxic relationships that collegiettes tend to enter while experimenting with love. But Britney tells us that we can be completely bowled over by a guy and still hold the power in the relationship with our feminine guiles. Not a bad suggestion, Britney!

Britney Spears has taught me far more than any of the so-called iconic pop stars today. From pigtails and a blazer to posing naked wearing a web of diamonds, she too made the transformation from schoolgirl to adult. And boy did she do it well! So whether you bust out some dance moves, strip down in a club, or stalk your boyfriend compulsively, every one of us possesses a bit of the Britney spirit, and we ought to flaunt it proudly!

I'm a senior at the University of Pittsburgh who loves traveling the world, writing, and college life in general. My majors are Environmental Studies and Biology, but I want to focus on journalism too if possible. I'm super passionate about Model United Nations, of which I am now president (yay!), and the environment. I'm a very happy, enthusiastic person who loves pickles and twizzlers and brightly-colored nailpolish and long dangly earrings, among other things. Her Campus is my favourite website and I'm so excited to be a part of Pitt's campus chapter!
