Pittsburgh is full of incredible bookstores, so whether you’re looking for the newest bestseller or a book on your newest niche interest — there’s a bookstore for you!

White whale bookstore

Location: 4754 Liberty Avenue

This Bloomfield bookstore’s tag line says it best: “Conversation, Community, and Culture. A home for book lovers.” This gorgeous store which features both a shopping section and a cafe is full of staff recommendations, new releases and popular favorites. They also have a wonderful selection of cards, stickers and totes. 

Amazing books and records

Location(s): 5858 Forbes Avenue & 929 Liberty Avenue

The most *amazing* bookstore with two awesome locations! Amazing Books and Records both buys and sells books as well as records. They offer a wide selection of both books and vinyl.

Location: 908 Galveston Avenue

A small bookstore on the North Side with “old world charm and modern customer service.” They offer a wide selection of books, including new, used, collectable, rare and foreign language books.

Offering a wide selection of new, used, rare and out-of-print books, this Dormont bookstore is perfect for any reader. They also offer a unique children’s section, and a fun selection of greeting cards!

The perfect shop for used and rare books, with a quaint interior and over 40,000 books, this Oakland bookstore is a perfect stop on a rainy day. They may not have all the bestsellers, but they definitely have some of the most unique books around. 

Big idea bookstore and cafe

Location: 4812 Liberty Avenue

A self-proclaimed radical collective, Big Idea offers books on a wide range of topics relating to social justice for readers with a heart for social change. Located in the Bloomfield area, they offer both new and used books, as well as pins, patches, posters, stickers and more!

Located in the North Hills, this Black-owned bookstore features a unique selection of books curated by husband-and-wife team Lea and Bill Bickerton.

Located just outside of the Strip District, this tiny bookstore is bursting at the seams with comics and zines. Perfect for the lover of comics old and new, this gorgeous bookstore is guaranteed to delight. And as a bonus, there’s a record store on one of the floors below!

Mystery lovers bookstore

Location: 514 Allegheny River Blvd

Located a short drive away in Oakmont, this bookstore is the third largest mystery bookstore in the United States! They also have a monthly mysterious book subscription, perfect for a reader looking for a little more thrill and intrigue.

Location: 4209 Butler Street

Less of a bookstore, and more of an indie gift shop, this Lawrenceville store offers a wide variety of cards, totes and home and desk accessories.

Lauren Deaton is a second-year student at the University of Pittsburgh, she is currently serving both as Chapter Chair and Writer. She most frequently writes about entertainment topics– including music recommendations, topics of representation, and anticipated movie lists. Lauren is double majoring in English Literature and Media and Professional Communications with a focus on Public and Professional Writing. She is also pursuing a Film and Media Studies minor and is a member of the Honors College. She recently completed a communications internship with the Fletcher Free Library and will be beginning a research position with the Language and Literacy Division at Pitt during the Fall 2023 semester. In the future, she hopes to work in publishing helping to increase access to representation. She is also a writer for Studio 412 a creative outlet on Pitt’s campus and is a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority. Lauren loves her dog, her friends, her family, and everything reading, coming of age and cold brew related.
