Baby It’s Cold Outside: Ways to Keep Warm & Look Hot

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Ah, Pittsburgh. It’s that time of year again: clouds, rain, clouds, snowfall, ice, clouds: must I continue? Even as I sit in the Hillman now I still hear people filling their conversations along the likes of “It was freezing today” and “I could even see my breath!”
Whenever someone asks me where I’m from and I say Buffalo, they immediately say, “Wow! So, this is nothing for you.” And truthfully, no, it’s really not. However, from years of growing up in the winter hellhole that we call “Buffalo,” I have accumulated great tips to keep toasty firsthand, from my friends and from who knows best. My momma.

A Cute Statement Jacket

When it comes to jacket, the warmest ones will most likely be the most expensive. And if you have to splurge on something during the wintertime, jackets should be it. However, just because it’s warm, doesn’t mean it can’t be adorable, such as these three jackets, all from urban outfitters (links to browse where I found them are available at the bottom). Choose a great trench with a cinched waist lined with faux-fur. It looks great, creates a flawless shape and paired with boots and jeans: talk about turning up the heat.
For something like the green jacket that is thinner material, make sure to wear a thermal underneath. Thermals are great ways to keep warm and being that they are tight they won’t bulk you up.
And of course, the ever-popular North Face is still is a fantastic way to keep warm, especially on the days where you want to go casual.

Please, Mind your Head

From personal experience, covering my head is one of the two ways I keep the most warm. As you know, heat escapes significantly from your head, so make sure to keep it insulated. Put on a slouchy hat (make sure it covers you ears) for a laid back, relaxed chic look. Another thing that I absolutely love are the amazing ear-covering headbands, such as the braided grey one from Urban Outfitters.

No Scarf, No Service
A scarf is the second way I keep the most cozy. If my neck or my chest are exposed, I immediately feel colder. Two years ago I bought a giant, oversized grey cable knit scarf and to this day am not seen without it in the winter. A scarf is a great accessory, because it can be paired with anything to pull a look together. Another great type of scarf is the Infinity scarf. Draping it around your head a few times? Fabulous!

Gloves/Practical Shoes
Protecting your hands and feet is also essential. Gloves come in a variety of styles, so finding one that matches yours won’t be a problem. Make sure to also choose water-resistant and well-lined shoes. If your shoes look great but let water seep in, your feet won’t be too happy with you.

Just because the weather is disagreeable doesn’t mean that your style has to suffer. In fact, my favorite fashion trends usually emerge in the winter. Keep a few tips in mind and if you have any of your own that you would like to share, feel free!
