7 Surprising Fashion Trends to Rock in the Rain

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Rainy days are inevitable here in Pittsburgh and no one is excited about them… especially when it comes to fashion!  Unfortunately, we know a plethora of items in our closets that will never work, and because of this we cry to ourselves as we look out the gloomy window.  However, the view doesn’t have to be gloomy forever, because there are fashionable pieces you can still rock in the rain! The key is the material, shape, and color of what you are planning to wear. Keep in mind the following seven items next time you encounter a rainy day:

1. Cotton Rompers: Almost all rompers are made out of very thin cotton that won’t stick or weigh you down when wet. They are a huge, unexpected trend right now, plus they look super cute. The fact that there are shorts built in makes it easy to jump puddles, bend over, and run in the rain. Plus, they come in bold colors and fun prints to brighten up a gloomy day!

2. Athletic Wear: All athletic wear is designed to hide water marks and diminish odor, which is useful in the rain. If the outfit gets wet, it will dry before you know it. Plus, you won’t be carrying around that musky-rain smell.

3. Combat Boots: Am I the only one who is already sick of the rubber pull-on boots almost every single girl has on campus? Combat boots work just as well in the rain! The leather of these more sophisticated boots will repel water and keep your feet as dry as a pair of rain boots would.

4. Leather Accents: A big trend right now is leather shoulder patches, which I think are super cute and add detail to any outfit!  The part of your body that will absorb the most rain are your shoulders, and these patches will wipe away the drizzles of rain.

5. Anoraks: Anoraks are a cool, new take on the raincoat to make your rainy day a little more interesting. Like a typical raincoat, they come in multiple colors and prints and will definitely keep you dry through all variations of rain.

6. Tote Bags: I know I for one am completely sick of carrying around a soaking wet Vera Bradley backpack after a storm. Switching to a leather tote-bag will save you a lot of trouble. Since tote bags are vertical and the top section is mostly covered by your arm, there is less surface space for rain to hit it.

7. And finally… Cropped Leggings!: Leggings are becoming almost as popular as jeans because of how comfortable, classic, and (sometimes) fun they are. By wearing cropped leggings, you are avoiding any contact with groundwater and puddles. The fabric of leggings is so thin and lightweight that it will dry quickly, unlike jeans which retain water for a long period of time.
