7 Reasons Why Everyone Should take a Course in Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

I might be biased because it’s my minor, but I truly believe that everyone should take at least one Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies course during their time in college. Taking these courses has allowed me to meet some amazing people and has also opened my eyes to many different perspectives. Read on to learn more about the many advantages that come along with enrolling in a GSWS course!

1. The people you meet and the discussions you have

Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies is a diverse department at Pitt. Lots of different people take these courses for various reasons: they’re curious about the department, interested in the subject matter, or maybe just filling a gen-ed requirement. GSWS classes have given me the opportunity to talk with people who have many different experiences and ideas. Class discussions are always fascinating because of all the diverse perspectives that are gathered in one room.

2. It’s politically relevant

A lot of the things that are discussed in Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies are important to what’s going on in the country right now. Anti-discrimination, LGBTQ+ rights and women’s reproductive choices are all topics that are in the spotlight right now and are also read about often in GSWS courses. Discussing themes that are currently relevant both helps you to have a better understanding of what’s going on, and also makes the class more interesting.

3. The community surrounding the department

Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies is a pretty new field; it only started to pop up in the US during the 1970’s. The GSWS minor only became available at Pitt this year! Because it’s so young, it’s also a pretty small department. This means that you can really get to know your professors and the people in your classes. Plus, everyone who’s involved with GSWS is in it because they’re passionate about equality!

4. The field is ever-changing

Another benefit of taking a course in such a young field is that the theory is constantly changing. New articles are always being written on current happenings that are relevant to GSWS, and ideas from even a decade ago are now being rethought and reworked. Being in a growing field keeps things interesting and also gives you the opportunity to add your own ideas.

5. The classes are a change of pace

The field of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies was originally developed by women who were tired of not learning about the accomplishments of other women. They felt that most subjects were focused on what men have done and they wanted to see themselves represented as well. Taking a course that shifts some of the focus to women is refreshing to see!

6. The courses are mind-opening

Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies is a field dedicated to acknowledging the experiences of everyone. The people involved in GSWS makes a point of listening to a wide variety of ideas and viewpoints and making these opinions known. Taking these classes has exposed me to so many different ways of thinking and I am honestly a better and more accepting person for it.

7. It’s empowering

There is nothing more inspiring than having a discussion about issues that matter to you with a roomful of brilliant women (because, frankly, not many men take these courses, though they should!) It is truly empowering to learn more about the politics and social influences that impact our world, our interactions, and our rights.

Scheduling is just around the corner, so if you’re looking for a fascinating and meaningful class to fill an empty spot in your schedule, consider something in Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies!
