6 No Makeup Beauty Tips to Bring Out Your Inner Shine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

As someone with absolutely no cosmetic intuition, I consider myself an expert in wearing makeup without actually wearing makeup—that is, bringing out natural beauty. After all, whatever amount of makeup you’re wearing, the point is to accentuate the beautiful features that are already there. If you don’t have time to do a full face or you just feel like going with a natural look, these non-makeup looks will let your natural beauty shine.

Invest in an eyelash curler

Whether you’re wearing makeup or not, an eyelash curler is guaranteed to be your best friend when it comes to long, full lashes. Curling your eyelashes instantly boosts your look by defining your eyes. If you want a long-lasting curl, heat your curler up with a hairdryer before using it.

Swap out mascara for olive oil

I know this sounds a little weird, but trust me. Olive oil makes your lashes look longer and darker while still maintaining a natural look. Plus, it nourishes your lashes and stimulates healthy growth. Dab it onto the root of your lashes using a cotton swab or clean hands for instant definition and fuller, healthier lashes in the long term.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Moisturizer is important for many reasons—preventing wrinkles, stopping breakouts and protecting against damage from the environment. But it can also serve as a subtle replacement for highlighter. Moisturized skin has a healthy glow that brings out the natural contours of your face. Finding the right moisturizer for your skin type is a gamechanger when it comes to skincare!

Try a brow growth serum

Using a growth serum on your brows is a great way to get fuller, more defined brows that don’t take forever to do in the morning. If you’re going for a bold look, you can add a growth serum into your routine and use it with your usual brow products. For a DIY alternative, try using coconut oil or olive oil instead—but be careful if you have finicky skin, as these oils can sometimes cause breakouts.

Use a concealer with acne medication

Okay, so this one isn’t totally makeup free. But no matter how flawless your skin is, everyone experiences breakouts at some point. Instead of layering on makeup that will clog your pores even more, use a concealer that clears your skin while also covering blemishes. Look for lightweight concealers that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for the best results.

Substitute peppermint oil for lipstick

If you want fuller lips, there’s an easier way than overlining—try a little peppermint oil. Peppermint oil stimulates blood flow which naturally plumps your lips. Dab a little on with your finger, or if you have sensitive lips, try adding it to a lip gloss or applying it with lip balm. Tip: since peppermint oil can sometimes cause slight irritation, try putting it on a small portion of your lip before applying it everywhere.

Whether you choose to wear makeup or not, the most important thing is that you feel beautiful. Have fun with your look and, whatever it is, wear it with confidence!
