5 Ways to Wear Trends from New York Fashion Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

For those of you who are bored of the go-to college girl uniform, aka high-waisted shorts and crop tops, try getting a little adventurous and change things up! Take a look at some of the major trends from this season’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City. A lot of the styles are totally adaptable for every day campus wear. Here are some tips on how to do it:

Look For Soft, Feminine Colors

Two of the most popular colors from the runway are ballerina pink and sky blue. WIN! Not only do these colors look great on almost any skin tone, they also look great together. A simple way to get either of these colors to pop is to wear them with neutrals, like white or gray. You can even pair them with a bold color, like emerald green or crimson. The best thing is that you’ll have a ton of options for styling your look.

Buy A Killer Jacket

Fall is approaching quickly, and jackets are soon going to become your best friend. If you find one that’s versatile and fits your personality, you can wear it with almost anything! If you are going for a more structured look, a wool coat is a great option, and you can find them in a variety of colors. Canvas jackets are better if you like the grungy, yet functional look. These jackets usually come in earth tones, like army green or tan. If you are the really adventurous type, a patterned coat is an awesome way to add some pizazz to a basic outfit.

Bling It Out

The runways were absolutely covered with beading and sequins this week. Whether it was on gowns, sweaters, or shorts, there were embellishments everywhere. Glitter and shine are a quick way to dress up a laid back outfit. Find a sweater with a little bit of bling and you can wear it with anything from a colored pair of shorts, to a pair of drapey sweatpants. An ornate skirt can easily balance out a menswear style button down or a pair of combat boots.

Go Monochromatic

Monochrome outfits have been huge the last few years, and they still managed to take over the runways this season. Wearing all one color is a good way to add drama while keeping it simple. Neutrals are always easiest to pull off in monochromatic looks (who doesn’t love an all-black getup?). However, wearing all red is a little more difficult. My advice is: if you’re wearing a bold color, keep the look simple and structured. A less abrasive color (like pale blues and pinks) will work with more edgy styles. FYI, monochromatic outfits also look excellent with a bold lip color.

Get Matchy

Much like the monochromatic look, pairing a patterned piece with another item of the same pattern is a simple, yet eye catching look. Plus, you can buy a whole outfit in one shopping trip because the matching pieces are usually sold together! Now, I’m not talking about a sweater set like your grandma wears, but a skirt and crop top that are made with the same material look fabulous and chic enough that people will be able to tell that you have serious style!
