4 Lessons From the Meghan Markle Interview That Will Change Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

In an interview that sent shock-waves through the world, Meghan Markle revealed to Oprah Winfrey that she was mistreated by the British monarchy. This interview made clear that not all that glitters is gold. According to Markle, the British media launched ruthless attacks against her character and the monarchy left her defenseless. In order to protect herself and her family, she and her husband made the bold decision to create some distance between themselves and the institution. Her choice was not easy, but it was necessary. Here is what we can learn from it.

Do your research!

It is natural to lead with love, that’s how things SHOULD be. However, before we rush towards our dream partner, job or opportunity, we must read the terms and conditions. We should never be willing to take a deal if it means sacrificing our voice and forsaking who we are.

Speak up!

The Oprah interview allowed Meghan to reshape her narrative and change the world’s perception about her. Simply by owning your truth, you can receive support and give others the courage to do the same. Although everyone does not have Oprah’s star power to magnify our story, we all do have silent supporters. We’re all humans on this earth with voices that deserve to be heard. Once you begin using your voice, you will find that, at the core, none of your fears, struggles and insecurities are uncommon.

Set boundaries!

No one should have the power to destroy your mental health. It is hard, but you can love people from a distance. It is important that we value ourselves enough to walk away from people and situations that are actively working against our peace. Not everyone is deserving of our energy.

Buck the system!

This former duchess walked away from one of the oldest power structures in the world: the British monarchy. It is OKAY to activate change. Nobody died, nothing exploded and the world did not end. While it was a hard decision to make, everyone must make the choice that works for them. She and Harry had the freedom to walk away and they did. They seem to be better for it. Had they not left, they would’ve been living someone else’s dreams and following someone else’s rules for their lives.

In honor of Women’s History Month, cheers to Meghan Markle for being brave enough to take control of her own destiny. She has set the precedent that we must teach others how to treat us. Her risky move has demonstrated that sometimes living in a fairytale means creating your own happily ever after.
