3 Tips to Help You Rock Your Next Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

With spring semester here, many may be finding themselves focused on a very important date that will be here before we know it – graduation day. Yes, graduation is only a few short months away. However, after graduation comes the next big step in our life, entering adulthood. If you’re like me, you may find yourself endlessly scrolling on Linkedin looking for jobs to apply to start your career. Or, you may be one step ahead and preparing for your very first job interview. While the stress of an interview is most definitely a lot, don’t fret. Here are some tips that I’ve used when applying to jobs and internships.

Research the Company

Please, and I mean please, don’t go into an interview not knowing anything about the company you’re applying for. Before doing an interview, you should always take some time to learn about their company values, workplace environment, goals, etc. For instance, if you’re applying for a writing position, get yourself familiar with the type of articles the company has previously produced or learn their style and tone that they typically write for or even see their target audience. Most definitely, you may find yourself being asked about why you chose to apply with the company, and if you don’t know anything about the company at hand, you may find yourself starting your interview off on the wrong foot. You don’t have to know everything, but it’s super important to at least make yourself familiar with not only the company, but the position you’re applying for.

Be Confident

This one sounds easier than it is, and I completely understand. I’m the type of person who anxiously stresses out about an interview the days, hours and even minutes leading up to the interview, but I find myself being able to relax the minute the interview starts. One of the key things that I’ve learned regarding interviews is that confidence is super important. Remember that you got the interview for a reason, and the company is looking to learn more about you, so be confident in yourself and your abilities. Sometimes it also helps when you dress with confidence as well. Pick out your favorite blazer and create an outfit that makes you feel like a rockstar, and rock the interview. I know it can be scary, but trust me, you got this! Believe in yourself and your capabilities!

Be Prepared to Ask questions

Before beginning your interview, you should always and I mean always prepare questions for your interview. Most likely in your interview you’ll be given the opportunity to ask any questions you have regarding the position and the company. When asked this, be prepared and ask as many questions as you want. Asking questions not only allows you to clear up any confusion you may have regarding the position or the company, but also allows you insight and shows your interest in the company. You never not want to have any questions. When researching the company, you may find yourself having questions regarding the company’s workplace culture or even learning about their target audience. Or your questions may be targeted towards the position you’re applying for. No matter what, be sure to prepare at least three questions, for when the opportunity arises.

Interviews can be scary, especially when it comes to applying for something that is the next step into your future career and life. Hopefully these tips can be helpful, and relieve some stress regarding your next interview. Remember – you got this! Good luck!
