25 Songs to Get You Through a Breakup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Breakups absolutely suck. Whether they were a two week fling or quite possibly “the one”, you’re probably going to feel like the emotional equivalent of a dropped ice-cream cone for some period of time. Although every breakup is a unique sort of living nightmare, music is definitely an essential part of the healing process across the board. With your iPod in hand and earbuds in place, there’s no need to feel alone. You don’t even have to explain to Taylor Swift that your ex was a major jerk, she already knows. Like the pop-god T-Swift, the staff here at Her Campus Pitt feels your pain. Along with virtual hugs, here are some of our favorite cry-your-eyes-out ballads, and I-didn’t-like-you-that-much-anyways anthems to get you through the rough times.

1. “Shake It Out” by Florence and the Machine

2. Florence and the Machine’s entire album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. Florence, we bow down to you. You are the queen of heartache.

3. “F*ck You” by Lily Allen (Note: This is especially recommended to play as you drive by your ex’s house.)

4. “Love Myself” by Hailee Steinfield

5. “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette

6. “I Wanna Get Better” by Bleachers

7. Literally anything by Beyoncé. Don’t worry; Bey will get you through this.

9. “Organs” and “Wolves Without Teeth” by Of Monsters and Men

10. “Looking Out for You” by Joy Again

11. “Should’ve Said No” and “We Are Never Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift

12. Taylor Swift’s entire album, Red. Nothing says heartbreak like Red.

13. Okay, really anything by Taylor Swift. In T-Swift we trust.

15. “The Scientist” by Coldplay

16. “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson

17. “Say Something” by A Great Big World
