12 Songs to Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

I am weirdly obsessed with Irish music. I have a whole Irish genre on my iTunes which I normally break out when I feel like I need to be cheered up. I also have a playlist on iTunes focused on Irish-inspired music. I have multiple two-hour-long videos bookmarked on YouTube consisting just of traditional Irish music. Why? Who knows? I just really, really like Irish folk music.

So, to celebrate my love for the traditional folk music of Ireland (and, perhaps, Saint Patrick’s Day), I’ve put together an 8tracks playlist of some of my favorite Irish songs. It’s available here.

1.      “Riverdance” by The Celtic Lords & Musica Canora Projets

2.      “The Rocky Road to Dublin” by The Dubliners

3.      “Danny Boy” by Declan Galbraith

4.      “Marie’s Wedding” by The High Kings

5.      “Firelands” by Tracey Hewat

6.      “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” by Dropkick Murphys

7.      “The Gartan Mother’s Lullaby” by Celtic Women

8.      “Reel Around the Sun” by Bill Whelan

9.      “Finnegan’s Wake” by The High Kings

10.  “The Parting Glass” by The Wailin’ Jennys

11.  “An Irish Party in Third Class” from the Titanic soundtrack

12.  “Another Irish Drinking Song” by Da Vinci’s Notebook

Some of the songs are not actually traditional Irish folk songs (and some, such as “Another Irish Drinking Song,” are spoofs of the genre), but I think they capture the overall quality of the magic and individuality of Irish music.

Hope you had a great Saint Patrick’s Day!
