It’s time we all face the truth: feminism is stupid. It’s as simple as that.

I know some of you must be quite angry that I just made that statement. However, I suggest you keep reading, and you’ll find out why I think this.

I realize this is a topic that many people must be tired of; it’s as if everywhere we go we hear the word feminist being thrown out. People constantly profess that they are either adamant feminists, or that they never would be. This is exaclty what I am referring to when I say feminism is stupid. First of all, so many people are extremely tired of this matter as both a social issue, and a topic of conversation. In fact, I am tired of it, as well. However, this doesn’t mean we should stop talking about it. It means we should be talking about it more than ever. The fact that, in this day and age, there are still women who deny being feminists makes it all the more relevant. Clearly this is a social issue that has not been resolved and must be worked on.

I know that the easy way out of this conversation is to roll our eyes and tune out what people are saying. However, as soon as we do this, we, as women, are basically undermining our presence and relevance on this planet. It’s no secret that we live in a man’s world, but little by little, this is changing. This is when feminism and its stupidity come into the picture. Throughout history, women have been considered as less than men. Currently, this is still a tremendous problem. Knowing this, it is absolutely mind-boggling that there are still women out there who claim they are not feminists. It is entirely ridiculous that we have even allowed society to turn a positive idea into one that carries such a negative connotation. It is truly amazing how so many people completely disregard the definition of the word “feminism” simply to not be considered as part of a group of women that is interpreted as a crazy one. How we have managed to destroy the meaning of the word is beyond my understanding, but the mere fact that so many people just allow this misconception of feminism to infiltrate so many minds is simply sad.

“Feminism: the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.” Don’t believe me? Ask Merriam-Webster

Feminism is one of the best ideas out there. Feminism is something that would make the world a better place for everyone; not just for women. Feminists are people who believe in the equality of people. All women should be feminists. All men should be feminists. However, it is so much more shocking when a woman is afraid to declare herself a feminist. How is it, exactly, that there are women who still say: “I would never be a feminist!” Or, my personal favorite: “I am kind of a feminist, in some ways.” As a woman, why would you deny yourself the opportunity to have the same career as your male counterpart? Why would you agree that it is okay to be paid less than a man for completing the same job? Why would you subject yourself to being considered less than?

Our society has deliberately made a revolutionary idea into an evil conspiracy theory, and we have just sat back and watched as it happened. Feminism is not stupid. Forgive me for saying so, but people are stupid. We are stupid for allowing ourselves to be brainwashed into thinking that feminism is wrong. We are stupid for letting others control our beliefs to such great lengths that we often agree with statements such as, feminism is stupid. We are stupid for not realizing the true power of one small word, and yet simultaneously giving it so much more power in all of the ways we shouldn’t. I know, feminism has become such an unoriginal subject; there is no denying it has been discussed extensively. However, I will not stop talking about it until men and women are afforded equal rights. We, collectively, cannot deny that feminism is good. And we cannot allow ourselves to be afraid of being misinterpreted by declaring ourselves feminists. We need to change the meaning of the word by getting rid of all of the bullshit that surrounds it. Feminism needs to be recognized for what it is, and not for what those against it want us to think it is. Only then will we be on the way to making the lack of equal rights a non-issue. Remember, the sooner we get there, the sooner we can stop wearing down the subject.
