It’s Halloween time again, and while nowadays that means midterms and buying bargain candy, there was once a time when October was celebrated for trick-or-treating, middle school parties, and all your favorite Disney Channel movies. To help you get back to those days (and maybe procrastinate on a midterm or two) we’ve put together a list of the top five DCOMs to revisit this Halloween.

5. Twitches Too: This movie was definitely not ‘good’ by the definition of any variety of movie critic, but as Pepperdine students, we stand by Tia and Tamera and the nostalgia that Twitches Too brings. Besides which, with this sequel we get more magic, more time in Coventry, and that plot twist at the end that shocked us to the core of our middle-school souls.

4. Phantom of the Megaplex: This one was the mythical movie we always managed to get halfway through before our babysitter decided it was time for bed, so we’re not really authorities on this. But either way, the first forty minutes included plenty of scary mishaps in the movie theater, and we’re pretty sure it was based on Phantom of the Opera, and that was a good story, so we’re putting this at number four.

3. Return to Halloweentown: Honestly, the entirety of the Halloweentown franchise could be on this list, but since this list is only five items long, we’ve limited ourselves to the top two. This fourth installment of the Halloweentown series is ranked at number three because of the romance, the thick, twisting plot that felt a lot longer than an hour and a half, and the fact that it’s set at a magical university. The combination of college and magic was all our little hearts had ever longed for.

2. Twitches: The fact that two of our alums starred in this certainly doesn’t hurt, but our obsession with Twitches started long before our pride in Tia and Tamera’s connection to Pepperdine. A long lost twin, magical powers, and every cheesy spell you can imagine; this DCOM is the ultimate in dream fullfillment.

1. Halloweentown: “Being normal is vastly overrated.” Honestly, that quote right there was enough to launch this movie to number one, being as that was pretty much our motto in middle school. But beyond that, who doesn’t wish they were secretly a witch with magical powers? Not to mention, Marny’s thirteen when she finds out she’s a witch, which was a relief to our middle-school selves when our hogwarts letters didn’t come for our eleventh birthdays. Add in a few jokes from Benny the skeleton cab driver, and you’ve got us packing our bags for Halloweentown (which apparently is a semi-real place).
