Ahh Valentine’s Day. A day of love, laughter, and lots of chocolate. A day for couples to be more ooey gooey than they normally are. If you’re like me, you dread February 14th. Everyone is so obsessed with love and being cuffed and getting presents.

Although I am in a relationship this Valentine’s Day, it has no more meaning than any other day for me. Why not make a big deal about loving your significant other every day? For me, the day has become so much less special because every couple everywhere is celebrating, not just me and my boyfriend.

Alas, my boyfriend is not so cynical about Valentine’s Day. He’s not obsessed, but he doesn’t…um despise it like I do. Here’s a pic of me and my cutie because the HC world hasn’t met him yet, and I will not waste an opportunity to show him off:

Anyway, here’s your Valentine’s Day survival guide comprised by yours truly.

For my single ladies/lads:

1. Treat yourself! Go buy yourself something nice…or just some really good food.

2. Hangout with friends! Don’t stress about finding that special someone to spend the day with; spend the day with the already-special people in your life

3. Or…literally just treat it as a normal day. Go to work, workout, grocery shop, call your mom, whatever it is you normally do, do it! You’ll find that there isn’t some sort of pink sparkly magic floating in the air.

For my couples:

1. Discuss with your partner what you both want! Compromise is key. If your girlfriend wants a candlelit picnic on the beaches of Greece, but you just want pizza and to do laundry, compromise! Go out to a nice-ish pizza place and let her dress up, and then go home and turn on a movie while you do laundry (You get the idea!).

2. An easy present is candy and/or flowers! But, don’t get those nasty, cheap, heart-shaped chocolates at the local pharmacy. *bleh* Instead, get them their favorite candy, regardless of its shape (to an extent).

3. Don’t ignore the day completely! No matter how much your partner despises Valentine’s Day, a simple “Happy Valentine’s Day!” can go a long way.

Hello! My name is Emma. I am a student at Pepperdine University and I am studying Philosophy with the hopes of obtaining my MFT license after I graduate in 2021. I was born in Houston, Texas, and raised in Waco, Texas. That being said, I am avid supporter of Baylor sports and TexMex! I believe mental health is the most important thing to maintain in college. Some ways that I maintain mine include (but are not limited to) boxing, Disney, and beach days with my friends out here in Malibu!

This is my senior year of college and I'm a Public Relations major with a Creative Writing outside concentration. I was born and raised in So-Cal and love it so much I couldn't go too far. As much as South California is my home, I adore traveling and learning about other cultures. A Disney fan to the core you can find me watching any of their movies, or breaking my bank account at Disneyland, and if not I'll probably be reading, writing, or enjoying the Malibu climate.
