Five Books to Read in December

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pepperdine chapter.

As the days get colder, few things sound more appealing than curling up on a comfortable couch with a cozy blanket, a cup of hot tea, and a good book. However, being an avid reader sometimes means getting so engrossed in one book that it becomes difficult to choose which one will follow it. I have a few suggestions for those cold nights when you just can’t seem to pick a book from your bookshelf. These will surely get you into the holiday spirit, whether you’re looking for something light and fun to read, or something a little more serious and challenging.

1. Wuthering Heights: Sandra Bullock’s character in The Proposal, Margaret Tate, is a book editor and she says in the movie that she reads it every Christmas. Besides, this is a classic that should be read anyway! Margaret Tate is an incredibly intelligent woman, as was Emily Bronte, and there is something about English novels that just makes them better to read when it’s cold out.

2. From Notting Hill with Love… Actually: Speaking of English novels, this book, written by Ali McNamara, is set in London. As you may imagine by the title, it is inspired by the romantic comedies we have come to know and love. It’s definitely a cute read that will leave you smiling. If you are a Sophie Kinsella fan, then this is definitely a book you should read!

3. Skipping Christmas: This book, by John Grisham, tells the story of a couple that is fed up with the typical Christmas they are obliged to deal with every year. It is funny and insightful, and will definitely keep you entertained. The movie Christmas with the Kranks was based on this novel and is also a must-watch!

4. Pastels & Jingle Bells: This novella is another cute book that will likely be a quick read that leaves you cheerful and ready for the holidays! Christine Feldman wrote this book as the first of the Heavenly Bites series, and with a main character who owns a bakery, you will be even more inspired to bake the best Christmas cookies.

5. A Christmas Carol: This is the epitome of Christmas classics! Charles Dickens did a great job of creating a resonating story that has been retold and recreated time and time again. If you are looking to truly get into the holiday spirit with a good read, there are few books that will accomplish this as well as this one. Immerse yourself in the world of Mr. Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the three ghosts, and take it as an opportunity to reflect on what your Christmas spirit–and life spirit– will be centered on this year.

I'm a Pepperdine University senior from Texas. I'm a Leo, a total dog lover, and an avid reader. Spanish is my first language, so I am bilingual and working on being trilingual (I just need to turn my conversational French into fluent French). I love to write; it's a way of life!
