5 Ways to Stay Boredom-Free While Traveling

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pepperdine chapter.

Winter vacation and traveling come hand in hand and traveling can be a boring, long pain, but with the right plan in your pocket, you can keep the boredom at bay on your way home for the holidays and not spend the entire time scrolling.

1. Do Your Homework

I know, how horrible of me to suggest you do homework. But think about it, any work you’ve been cruelly assigned, whether it be the final touches on an essay or teacher evaluations, you won’t have to think about for the rest of your break if you get it done now.

2. Christmas Shop

Whether you’re flying, catching a train, or riding along with a friend, more than likely you’ll be waiting around for a little while, so why not get all your holiday shopping done? Take advantage of that dead time and figure out what you’re going to be gifting, and if you’re really efficient you can even go ahead and order your gifts.

3. Listen to Podcasts

If you just want to take it slow, unwind, and de-stress after finals and dead week, there are so many different podcasts out there. There are ones for relaxing, ones for educating, ones just talking about life, etc. It’s almost certain that you can find one to listen to in anticipation of getting home.

4. Catch Up on Your Shows

This is the time to binge watch shows, and no one will judge you for binging during travel. Take hold of this opportunity with both hands and binge, baby binge. Quick reminder: don’t get too focused, or you know, you might miss your stop/boarding.

5. Bring a Book

For the past semester, you’ve probably reading text books, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd drafts of the same paper, and books that you probably never want to see or hear of again. Take the time you have ahead of you and read something that doesn’t make your brain melt.

So, there you have it, five ways that don’t count as thumb exercise to keep yourself entertained, engaged, and most importantly enjoying your journey home. Yes, I know the homework doesn’t really count, but give me a break, I’m on holiday!

This is my senior year of college and I'm a Public Relations major with a Creative Writing outside concentration. I was born and raised in So-Cal and love it so much I couldn't go too far. As much as South California is my home, I adore traveling and learning about other cultures. A Disney fan to the core you can find me watching any of their movies, or breaking my bank account at Disneyland, and if not I'll probably be reading, writing, or enjoying the Malibu climate.
