Halloween’s one of the most fun holidays and includes exciting activities like pumpkin carving, finding the best Halloween costume, and getting together with your friends. One of my favorite things to do is gather around my loved ones and watch scary movies. Fortunately, Netflix released some Halloween blockbusters that would be perfect to watch this month. So, get some candy corn, turn off the lights, and get ready to be spooked by these captivating movies and series:

1. Ratched- This eight-episode series is adapted from a novel called One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey.

The series is set in 1947 in Northern California where Edmund Tolleson kills four priests and is sent to a mental asylum to be evaluated for his execution. This is where he finds out that his sister, Mildred Ratched has weaved her way into the hospital in order to save her brother from capital punishment. Nurse Ratched wins hearts at the hospital because of her kindness, appearance, and wittiness. This is very different from the literary villain we read about in Kesey’s book. Even though the series received mixed reviews, we can agree that the performance of the actors along with their costumes were immaculate.

2. Hubie Halloween- Released on October 7, 2020, Adam Sandler’s most recent movie is perfect to watch with family and young children. It is a classic  Sandler movie because of its comedic nature and sweet message. The movie also stars talented actors like Kevin James, Noah Schnapp, and Paris Berelc.

The movie is about a goofy, middle-aged man named Hubie Dubois. He lives in the town of Salem, Massachusetts which is also the unofficial Halloween capital of the country. He is mocked and bullied by everyone in the town due to his appearance and demeanor. Halloween is an extremely important holiday for Hubie who volunteers to spread the message of safety during the busiest day of Salem every year. However, no one takes him seriously until the townspeople start disappearing and Hubie emerges as their last hope. This movie has everything from Hubie’s ridiculous accent to his neighbor’s lupine tendencies and is the perfect film to get you in the Halloween spirit.

3. The Babysitter: Killer Queen- It is a sequel of the 2017 campy horror movie, “The Babysitter”. Even though the plots of the two movies are very similar, there is a major twist that will leave you open-mouthed. The story revolves around the same characters and the same cult. However, the sequel does include a funny and awkward dance number and a video game fight scene. The movie received mixed reviews and was said to be disappointing after its prequel. However, I think that it was entertaining and should be watched at least once.

4. The Haunting of Bly Manor- After The Haunting Of Hill House received so much love, Mike Flanagan released another Horror Drama series on October 9, 2020. The Haunting of Bly Manor has an outstanding plot that is bound to keep you engaged in all nine episodes. A governess named Dani Clayton gets a new job as a nanny of two children at a house in Bly. Flora and Miles are young orphans whose parents died in a car accident and are supposed to be looked after by Dani. From the title, it is obvious that the manor is haunted, but you will have to watch the show to figure out the mysterious part. Even though the series was not as scary as its sister show, the story is gripping and will make you glued to your screen.

5. The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell- Unlike others on the list, this is a cooking/lifestyle show. It was released in 2018 and consists of six episodes where Christine McConnell makes spooky edible creations. Christine also has a huge social media following where she displays a lot of her creations. It is different from a cooking show because it actually has a plot. The show is funny, interesting, and received positive reviews. You can expect to see anything from edible spiders to wolf-claw donuts. It is also great if you want some ideas for your next Halloween party.

This is my senior year of college and I'm a Public Relations major with a Creative Writing outside concentration. I was born and raised in So-Cal and love it so much I couldn't go too far. As much as South California is my home, I adore traveling and learning about other cultures. A Disney fan to the core you can find me watching any of their movies, or breaking my bank account at Disneyland, and if not I'll probably be reading, writing, or enjoying the Malibu climate.
